About this listen

Isaiah Quintabe - IQ for short - has never been more successful - or felt more alone. A series of high-profile wins in his hometown of East Long Beach have made him so notorious that he can hardly go to the corner store without being recognised. Dodson, once his sidekick, is now his full-fledged partner, hell-bent on giving IQ's PI business some real legitimacy: a Facebook page, and IQ's promise to stop accepting Christmas sweaters and carpet cleanings in exchange for PI services.

So when a young painter approaches IQ for help tracking down her missing mother, it's not just the case Isaiah's looking for but the human connection. And when his new confidant turns out to be connected to a dangerous paramilitary operation, IQ falls victim to a threat even a genius can't see coming.

Waiting for Isaiah around every corner is Seb, the Oxford-educated African gangster who was responsible for the death of his brother, Marcus. Only this time, Isaiah's not alone. Joined by a new love interest and his familiar band of accomplices, IQ is back - and the adventures are better than ever.

Unmissable

The IQ stories are really finding their feet now. The characters are becoming fleshed out and the relationships making sense. The story is intriguing. The humour is wonderful and totally in line with the overall story. The whole thing just works and really would make a great movie or TV show.

Good, but could have been better

All the best parts of the IQ stories are here - Isaiah, Dodson, problem solving, great narration; but ultimately it falls a little flat. It kept me interested and engaged throughout, but the story is a little predictable and unfulfilling. The main part of the book is Grace needing Isaiah's help to find her mother and resolve back-story issues. I was hoping this would mean that Grace's character would develop into a strong counter-point to Isaiah's but this didn't really materialise and the relationship didn't really develop in a way that was interesting or original.

The story-line doesn't need much brain power from Isaiah and Dodson's new-found role starts strong but fizzles and dies. So, all of the interesting setups that Ide left us with at the end of the previous book, don't really result in anything lasting or significant in this one. There's also not much here to leave us full of anctipation and excitement for the next one, so it feels like Ide run out of enthusiasm for the series before writing this.

That all sounds quite negative, but it was a still a good book and worth a listen if you're engaged in the series, If you're new to Isaiah, this probably isn't the best place to start.

Exciting and well performed

A number of threads intertwining. Like watching a movie thanks to the exceptional narration of Sullivan Jones.
Someone should pick this book up for a film series.

Really enjoying the IQ series by Joe Ide. Narration fantastic ad always. Started a touch slow but story really came together in the second half of the book. Cant wait for the next one.

weaker storyline

I enjoyed the book but would have preferred more interaction between Isaiah, his business partner n Doronda. Didn't see the point of the Barbett character also.

excellent narrator

Really enjoyed this and it is just as good as the previous books about IQ. I think it's worth listening in order as knowing the back story added to my enjoyment of this book . The narrator is excellent lots of different characters !
