  • Summary

  • Please note: this podcast includes discussion of mature themes including suicide and murder. Listener discretion is advised.

First Australians should also know that this podcast includes the names and stories of people who have died.

Days after Richard Dorrough violently takes his own life at a public gun range in Perth, Western Australia, his fiancée receives a parcel from him in the post - a book filled with the former sailor’s handwriting. She starts to read and, horrified by the chilling confession inside it, quickly hands the book to police....

Suicides rarely get reported. But reporters Dan Box and Kate Wild believe this unnerving public death is worthy of further explanation. Exploring what made Dorrough take his life leads the pair to the country’s far corners, to uneasy truths about race and prejudice in the criminal justice system and to questions about how we tell true crime stories.

In the process they start to understand that Dorrough took much more than just his own life.

Brilliant!

Finally a "true crime" podcast that digs deeper into the story and reveals what's wrong with how women are victimised and treated by police & justice system.

Not your average true crime podcast…

I’m the first to confess I probably listen to and watch far too many true crime shows, but this is probably the most well-balanced, and carefully considered I’ve come across in a very long while.

This podcast about the killer, but it’s also about the victims, it’s about the system, and even looks a little at the journalistic process.

Highly recommended.

Guilty

Interesting podcast that to me (a male) shows that no matter what faith, creed or colour a woman is or what she does in life or where in the world she lives, a woman should always feel safe and when she says no she means no but as we all know that’s not the case. To me the biggest problem this podcast and others like it exposed was how these women were lee down by the law and by that I don’t mean the police investigating the crimes but the law itself, such things has not been able to bring up past crime’s or convictions when a case goes to court is so wrong too me. Simply put to me, this podcast hi lights the fact that in the majority of places the world over, the law protects the guilty and not the innocent and as I said at the beginning women deserve the right to feel safe.

Incredible

If all true crime podcasts could be like this I’d be in heaven. The storytelling is amazing and respectful but still incredibly gripping

Characters good; plot less good.

I enjoyed the characters and their back story, but found the plot ordinary. Started to ‘put off’ listening to it & it remains unfinished.

terrible journalism

Attempting to tell a story within a wider context but comes across as ignorant and facile. avoid!
