About this listen

Carolyn Pickles retraces the true story of how 11 people came to be brutally cut with a deadly sharp implement, in a spate of attacks that left a town in a state of fear and police mystified about the identity of the attacker.

Halifax, West Yorkshire, 1938. The hunt is on for a razor-wielding attacker, possibly a murderer. The papers name him 'The Halifax Slasher'. A huge reward is offered for leads to his arrest. Vigilante groups form, and innocent men are set upon. Baffled, police argue with each other about how to catch the suspect.

This real-life whodunnit is told in the voices of victims, police officers, newspapers, townsfolk and historians.

The evidence is all here. Can you guess the Slasher's identity?

This is so very good. A lot of True Crime is sensationalist, somewhat sordid & exploits the victims and I avoid it.
This podcast is not that sort of thing at all.
It covers social history, local oral history, the context of both time & place and is a really fascinating story, deftly told.
It's very well-written & researched and Carolyn Pickles is excellent as she leads us through what happened.
Book all those concerned to make more like this!

A fascinating tale from pre-war Britain, very nicely put together, fitting between dramatised reenactments and commentary with great moody music.

Amazing story brilliantly produced

The ending let it down for me... but as it's a true story can't complain too much but still left me feeling frustrated...

Worth a listen though! Good narrating / voices...

Loved it! I live close to Halifax and know many of the street names mentioned in this tale of pre war panic.

The story is told in an honest and intriguing way and read by a true Yorkshire girl!

Told in such a way to keep you interested and gripped.
