Unique story
Never heard of a case quite like this: fascinating character study and complicated, intricate case.

Very good true life story of an unsolved murder
Well told by all participants incorporating intrigue, mystery, sadness and loss. The nature of the book shows the meticulous Syria taken by those trying to solve the case, often with very little to go on.
The only thing I didn't care for was how the book was separated into 11 very mini chapters. For some reason, my auto play wasn't working so I had to physically and change to the next chapter, in spite of having them all downloaded. Some were only 15 mins long, so a bit of a hassle as I was trying to cook our tea!

worth a listen
Paul Holes is brilliant, he's one of those responsible for the capture of the Golden State Killer. in this series he must be really frustrated. it's interesting and thought provoking.

cold case
very interseting and also very disturbing to listen to. Maybe in years to come the advances in pathology will answer many more of the, up to now, unanswered questions.

Well worth the complex listening
Fascinating. Thought provoking. Will need to listen again. Please don't tell me how many words I have to use. That's my choice. My experience.

Interesting, but ultimately disappointing
I did enjoy listening to this but there were several aspects that I felt let it down, not least the outcome of the case.
The whole thing starts off because Emmon Bodfish misses his psychologist's appointment... And that seems to be the last time she is mentioned. She surely would have provided SOME clues as to his state of mind, because CLEARLY Emmon had big mental health problems. The investigator talks about finding out details from the diaries, but what about the psychologist? Would she not have given useful information? Everyone seems to treat Emmon as if he is a rational human being, yet he bashes himself on the head (so severely he leaves marks) to get rid of some "force" that seems to inhabit his body. And this goes on for decades, it seems. People seem to have been impressed by his erudition -- could they not look past that? I'm including the investigator in that question. Emmon wrote his diaries partly in a code he invented -- the investigator only seems to care about the content of the mysterious passages, not why he was writing them like this.
The police seemed to be pretty slow off the mark in many respects, but maybe that's just an observer's point of view. Perhaps at the time, links were less easy to make... or doors less easy to open?
I enjoyed listening to people involved in the case -- investigators, witnesses, friends. And it was interesting to hear Emmon himself on archive recordings. But the ending was not a surprise to me, given Emmon's obvious mental problems. In fact, I pretty much guessed it in the first episode.

Interesting but with downsides
Interesting and very well told. But what's starts as a mystery thriller quickly becomes a depressing drama and unfortunately ends in an unsatisfactory way.
