The Turn of the Screw is an 1898 horror novella by Henry James which first appeared in serial format in Collier's Weekly. In October 1898, it was collected in The Two Magics, published by Macmillan in New York City and Heinemann in London.

The Valley of Fear is the fourth and final Sherlock Holmes novel by British writer Arthur Conan Doyle. It is loosely based on the Molly Maguires and Pinkerton agent James McParland. The story was first published in Strand Magazine between September 1914 and May 1915. The first book edition was copyrighted in 1914, and it was first published by George H. Doran Company in New York on 27 February 1915, and illustrated by Arthur I. Keller.

Love and Freindship [sic] is a juvenile story by Jane Austen, dated 1790, when Austen was 14 years old. Love and Freindship (the misspelling is one of many in the story) is clearly a parody of romantic novels Austen read as a child. This is clear even from the subtitle, "Deceived in Freindship and Betrayed in Love," which neatly undercuts the title. Written in epistolary form, it resembles a fairy tale as much as anything else, featuring wild coincidences and turns of fortune, but Austen is determined to lampoon the conventions of romantic stories.

Lucky, a naive American actress, has an accident in Tangier during a break from touring Europe performing in summer drama festivals. While her ankle heals, she takes a temporary job working at the American consulate where the Puppet Master, secret head of the CIA’s North Africa operations, is headquartered. He sees Lucky’s innocent appearance as an asset. He trains her as a courier and decoder, enticing her to stay for a year with enough money to pay for her future travels and higher education.

LUCKY WOLFESON is declared legally dead after a flashflood sweeps her SUV into a streambed on the island of Maui. Why she “died” is at the heart of this story of serial murders, abuse, illegal sales of Hawai’ian land, and love gone wrong. News of a killing shocks and seems rare; yet killing is a fascinating and quite common occurrence. What if the killer is kind, compassionate, and never prone to any sort of violence?

1984 centers on the consequences of totalitarianism, mass surveillance, and repressive regimentation of persons and behaviors within society. Orwell modeled the totalitarian government in the novel after Stalinist Russia. More broadly, the novel examines the role of truth and facts within politics and the ways in which they are manipulated. The story takes place in an imagined future, the year 1984 when much of the world has fallen victim to perpetual war, omnipresent government surveillance, historical negationism, and propaganda.
