I’m an executive, leadership expert, consultant, and author, and have spent my career exploring large organizations from the inside. I look for the lessons from the real world that help people and teams thrive, and that make work a more human place for all of the humans in it. I’m the author of The Problem with Change: And the Essential Nature of Human Performance (Little, Brown Spark, 2024), and co-author, with Marcus Buckingham, of Nine Lies About Work: A Freethinking Leader’s Guide to the Real World (Harvard Business Review Press, April 2019). My work has been featured in the New York Times, the Harvard Business Review, the Financial Times, Sloan Management Review, the Washington Post, Forbes, Business Insider, and Inc. Magazine. I've spent twenty years in the corporate world. After a few years designing concert hall acoustics and then an MBA, I spent fourteen years at Deloitte, ultimately as Chief Learning Officer for Leadership and Professional Development. I then moved to Cisco as an SVP, and created a new organization there—Leadership and Team Intelligence—that was entirely focused on bringing our best research, technology, coaching, learning, and assessment to bear on the question of how to make more teams like our best teams. I live in Montclair, NJ with my family. Music has been inside me for as long as I can remember. I revel in the rhythms of words, songs, and human interactions. I look for humor in everyday situations. I love what makes people weird. I’m fascinated by how stuff works. You can connect with me on LinkedIn or Instagram, or on my personal website.
