Hello, and welcome to my Author Page. The Unspeakable Acts Of Zina Pavlou is a very dark, twisty tale that’s inspired by a true crime. Set in 1954 London, it’s about Zina, a Greek Cypriot grandmother who is accused of murdering her daughter-in-law, Hedy - a crime punishable by death. Zina doesn’t speak any English and can’t read or write Greek, so the whole case has to be conducted through her young translator, Eva, who works for the Metropolitan Police. Eva also works at the Cafe de Paris as a coat-check girl, and is only doing this job to make ends meet. And she has problems of her own. She’s just lost a baby and her relationship with her husband Jimmy is crumbling. She takes on the job of translating for Zina and then instantly regrets it. She’s torn between being appalled by the brutal murder Zina is accused of committing and actually feeling sorry for this bewildered, lost woman - and wondering if perhaps she’s a victim herself. The true story this book is inspired by is little-known, and I was fascinated by how such a dramatic story could have been lost. In writing my novel, I looked at original documents, including police statements, news reports, medical reports and letters that the accused wrote and received in prison, all taken down and translated for her. If you’ve read The Unspeakable Acts Of Zina Pavlou, I’d love to know your thoughts. Do please leave a review. Thank you!
