John Humphreys was born in the UK Midlands, close to the center of the Industrial Revolution, the ‘Black Country’. He graduated with a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in biochemistry and wrote for New Scientist as well as working in pharmaceutical sales and clinical research. Over the last several years, John has spent a good deal of time writing on conservation and natural history. He is a founding member of EcoPhilly, a volunteer group working with the Catholic Archdiocese of Philadelphia to help establish creation care groups in parishes and schools. His interests include wildlife gardening, live theater, and enjoying his three children and six grandchildren. He is married to composer and musician Nancy Gifford. John draws on his extensive knowledge of natural history and the Catholic Church, as well as his skill at storytelling, to create the complex and unsettling world of the Cubes. He is hugely grateful for solid advice and encouragement from his nephew Adam Simcox (author of the Dying Squad series) and Adam’s equally talented wife Kirsty Eyre (author of Cow Girl and other comedies). Most of all, John thanks three of his most stellar fans for constructive criticism and always believing in him: his wife Nancy Gifford, daughter Emily Houck, and dear friend and daughter-in-law Deana Gifford.
