OiYan Poon is an award-winning researcher and leader for intersectional racial equity in education, author, and speaker. She is co-director of the College Admissions Futures Co-Laborative. Dr. Poon is often cited by journalists from The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, and The New Yorker, among other media. She has also appeared on shows and podcasts such as MSNBC’s The Reid Out and National Public Radio’s Code Switch, All Things Considered, and Marketplace. Dr. Poon is the author of Asian American is Not a Color: Conversations on Race, Affirmative Action, and Family (Beacon Press), co-editor of Rethinking College Admissions: Research-Based Practice and Policy (Harvard Education Press), and co-editor of Difficult Subjects: Insights and Strategies for Teaching about Race, Sexuality and Gender. After earning her Bachelor’s degree at Boston College and M.Ed. in College Student Affairs Administration at the University of Georgia, OiYan worked in multicultural student affairs, as the first Asian Pacific American Student Affairs director at George Mason University and the first Student Affairs Officer in Asian American Studies at UC Davis. She earned her Ph.D. in Race & Ethnic Studies in Education and Graduate Certificate in Asian American Studies at UCLA.
