Summary

The acclaimed author of Gods of Jade and Shadow returns with a mesmerising feminist re-imagining of Gothic fantasy, in which a young socialite discovers the haunting secrets of a beautiful old mansion in 1950s Mexico.

He is trying to poison me. You must come for me, Noemí. You have to save me.

When glamorous socialite Noemí Taboada receives a frantic letter from her newlywed cousin begging to be rescued from a mysterious doom, it's clear something is desperately amiss. Catalina has always had a flair for the dramatic, but her claims that her husband is poisoning her and her visions of restless ghosts seem remarkable, even for her.

Noemí's chic gowns and perfect lipstick are more suited to cocktail parties than amateur sleuthing, but she immediately heads to High Place, a remote mansion in the Mexican countryside, determined to discover what is so affecting her cousin.

Tough and smart, she possesses an indomitable will, and she is not afraid: not of her cousin's new husband, who is both menacing and alluring; not of his father, the ancient patriarch who seems to be fascinated by Noemí; and not of the house itself, which begins to invade Noemi's dreams with visions of blood and doom.

Her only ally in this inhospitable abode is the family's youngest son. Shy and gentle, he seems to want to help, but might also be hiding dark knowledge of his family's past. For there are many secrets behind the walls of High Place. The family's once colossal wealth and faded mining empire kept them from prying eyes, but as Noemí digs deeper she unearths stories of violence and madness.

And Noemí, mesmerised by the terrifying yet seductive world of High Place, may soon find it impossible to leave this enigmatic house behind....

Very good but almost ruined by the narration

Personally, I don't like this style of narration, with its flat intonation and overly enunciated, unnatural speech getting in the way of the flow of the story. The diction may be perfect, but good grief is it stilted. However, I needed to listen to this for book club as I knew I wouldn't have time to read in visual format, so I persevered, and the atmosphere of the story soon pulled me in enough that I could mostly ignore the narration. I very much enjoyed Noemi's vivid character; I loved the chilling mystery of it all; there were scenes that gave me visceral reactions; and everything came together for a satisfying conclusion. It's a gripping book, easily binge-able.

Fantastic story, strong narration, beautiful writing

This is a book written by someone who’s intimately familiar with classic gothic literature and it’s symbolism and recurring motifs. It captures the themes of such novels perfectly, sometimes subverting them and even managing to reflect critically on issues around race, imperialism, class, abuse, sexism, etc. It does so naturally, through the lens of its strong protagonist, giving us a beautiful narration of her inner thoughts and experiences. It’s also a brilliant example of how to build dread/horror and mystery for a modern audience. And the writing itself was also hauntingly beautiful. It felt like the world, the characters and the overall eerie atmosphere lingered on in my mind long after finishing the book.

The voice actor reading the story was very talented, her performance was fitting for this story. She did not commit the mistake of caricaturing the accents/voices of the characters as some narrators do. I prefer more subtle performances and hers was perfect.

Great story terrible narrator

I instantly disliked the narrator. The entire book was told with one same pace and tone. Breathy and monotonous. I stuck with it as the plot was intriguing and different. I think I’d recommend this one as a read instead of a listen to be honest.

Perfect book. Must read (listen) for any lovers of gothic horror. Great reading performance. Will struggle to follow it up with something just as good!

A stunner of a book

Loved, loved loved this book. So well written and compelling despite the obligatory gothic tropes. The descriptions of the house and the grounds took me right there. Howard was so awful- a true horror classic.

Continually unnerving

There is continuous suspense to keep you glued to the story. Creepy and unnerving.

Seems slow in places but picked up towards the end

Book was okay but seemed slow and dragged along at the start. The pace picked up towards the end though.

I'm in awe.

I came with no expectations of whatsoever as I had never read anything by Moreno-Garcia and had heard mixed reviews (although more leaning towards positive), I was genuinely curious as to what this book holds within its pages, to my surprise and delight, this book pulled me into a dark, eerie world with a unique ambiance that is almost tangible.
I consumed it via audio-book, and while listening, I felt deeply engrossed and compelled towards the story. It's beautifully crafted and definitely makes me want to check the author's previous books right away!
One thing that I would like to point out is that the narrator's "English" accent sounded more German but that's me being picky.

Takes too long to get going.

A really fascinating world, but by the time you get to the reveal I had just stopped caring.
