About this listen
Do current political events make your head swim? Do you struggle to understand how Ukraine’s nationhood fits into the larger picture of history? Look no further than this brief but thorough exploration of Ukrainian history.
Ukraine is a geographically diverse country with the unfortunate fate of being sandwiched between empires. Though this is frequently explored no further than the global conflicts of the 20th century, in reality, Ukraine’s struggle for self-determination has far deeper roots than most people realize.
See the splendor of the Kyivan Rus, gallop with the Golden Horde across the Ukrainian steppe, encounter the legendary Cossacks, and witness the terror of the tsars. From the Romans to the Mongols to the Russians, Ukraine has seen it all and remained uniquely Ukrainian through it all.
Within A Brief History of Ukraine, you’ll find an exploration of how a singular people could be born out of so many crisscrossing empires, all vying for supremacy. Rather than being destroyed by the crucible that geography placed them in, the Ukrainian people became stronger, taking on different dimensions of each culture that came and went. Come discover the unique heritage of the Ukrainian people, and learn of their sorrows, struggles, and triumphs that have continued well into the present day.

Excellent Perspective!
This book casts an interesting light on European history from the perspective of Ukraine. Not just a Russian satellite, the history explains why Ukraine is a distinct and separate culture with a diverse and rich history. Their desire for independence is not a new idea- the author beautifully explains this in the context of cultural influences and perspectives. Very informative and well-done!

A concise, yet comprehensive review
This book - A Brief History of Ukraine: A Singular People Within the Crucible of Empires provides a concise account of the rich history of that nation and promotes an understanding of the dynamics that obtain today. I like the fact that the material encompasses historical facts about other European countries. The extensive background information in the book provides context for today’s war, making it easier to understand the events that lead to the conflict.
Unlike some historical texts, the book is easy on the ear and the narrator does a great job of bringing the text to life.

Good listen, kept me interested
I rarely find historical books interesting as I am a visual person. I’ve always struggled just memorizing dates and names. There has to be more to it in order to hold my interest and help me retain information. This book manages to do that. You’ll learn not only about the history of the country but also about the citizens that make it up and their desires, such as that for independence. Recommend for anyone who’s genuinely interesting in learning about Ukraine and its roots, as I’m sure many of us are considering current events.

Understand the past to understand the present
I have always been fansinated by history. Each country is piece of a huge juzzle puzzle that forms our current world. The author has clearly put a lot of effort into researching the history of a nation currently engulfed in an awful situation. I felt it was important to listen to book to gain a greater understanding of the country and it's people.

Informative and Clear!
The book is informative and it helps us understand what is happening in the present war. Ukraine is unique with a mix of land and their culture which gives clues to their lifestyle. Ukraine has a deep root which the book exposes and the black sea coast. They consider themselves strong with their heritage in the midst of their struggles which have also continued. It is educative to know more about the country to and understand their past.

Entertaining and enlightening
It is difficult to know how resilient a people have been until you know their history and all the things they have had to deal with. This book has really opened my eyes and given me a new respect for the 'Ukrainian identity,' as the author calls it.

Rooting for the people of Ukraine
This book does a remarkable job. This history is easy to listen to with superb narration.
Through centuries, Ukrainians have proven to be resilient and robust. History places today's war in the context of Ukrainian independence and self-governance aspirations. Sadly, in every instance where they achieve independence, neighbouring forces intervene. Hoping the best for the people of Ukraine.
Everyone interested in history, especially those involved in current efforts for their cause, should read this book.
