About this listen

THE NO. 1 SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLING SERIES

'The best of the new cosy crime writers' Daily Telegraph

It's spring 1990, and in Champton the whole village is aflutter as a glamorous Hollywood movie has taken over Lord de Floures' Champton House as its set location.

As the actors and extras hired from the village don their farthingales, gowns and crowns for a masque set in the 1600s, a murder interrupts filming on set - and it's an ingenious one . . .

Can Daniel solve the mystery with help from his sidekick, Detective Sergeant Neil Vanloo - even when things are so sticky between them?

Love the familiarity and gentleness of the writing. The story kept me intrigued. Beautifully read by Richard. I enjoyed this the most of the series.

Enjoyable, Sunday afternoon type listen

As above: interesting reveal at the end of another interesting tale! (Why the word requirement? Really not needed)

Interesting reveal at the very end of another interesting tale

as with all of his books Richard shoes his intelligence his humour and his knowledge.
the characters you love are in there as are the most important ones Hilda and Cosmo .
if you liked the others you'll love this one, if you haven't read any of them yet, lucky you, you have the delight of getting to know them all, don't mind Audrey it's just her way .

love the dry wit

I love how well Richard Coles writes about food, dogs, class, clothes and mostly people's foibles. Church history is as ever very interesting. I love the characters and the gentle humour and poignancy at times. He knows his recreational drugs...This from a retired shrink.

Comforting and witty

The reason I love RRC’s writing is that his murders don’t feel formulaic. We never know who is going to fall under the Reaper’s scythe or how many will fall after them. Midsomer Murders they are not!

This novel gives us more insight into the world of Champton and its history AND there is an absolutely BEAUTIFUL twist in it too!

I believe this is my favourite Canon Clement novel after Murder Before Evensong. Listening to it again forthwith!

Rev Richard always keeps us guessing!

I have always liked this series which combines so many of the things that interest me, cozy crime, church history, LGBTIQ+ and diversity and inclusion, and general intelligent conversation in a 1980s setting. I also enjoy that it is narrated by the author, who as we know is a Borderline National Trinket. But this is definitely the best so far.

The best one so far

Friends, please don't waste your time or your credit… The first book in the series was good, one of them was even tremendous, but unfortunately it's not this one. The story is unbelievable, the setting very formulaic, and the characters not very interesting.

So "cosy" i suffocated

I eagerly awaited this book but after one day I have to say I am disappointed with the pace at which Richard Coles is reading it. It is too much for me, the characters flit past leaving me out of breath unsure of who’s who. I have tried slowing the speed but that doesn’t work. I want a read to be enjoyable but this leaves me whirling!. The story so far is OK but a bit too soon to judge.

Slow down!

Poor story compared to the first couple, really teaching for a ending. Rather silly and way too contrived

Not as good as the first two
