Summary

In dark, wintry Lochdubh, Christmas Cheer is about as welcome as a flat tyre on a deserted road. The Calvinist element in town has always resisted what they view as secular frivolity, so for most of the townsfolk there'll be no carols, feasting, gifts - or even whisky on Christmas Day!

And for PC Hamish Macbeth there's no holiday from crime - he finds himself hunting for a missing cat belonging to a lonely spinster. Curt and unfriendly, the woman is convinced her pet has been stolen but once behind her heavily-bolted door, Hamish can spot her true problem - she lives in fear, though of who or what he cannot guess.

Then someone steals a Christmas tree and lights from the nearby village of Cnothan. So it is up to Hamish to sort all these problems out - and he had better do it quickly, for the church bells will soon peal on the eve of Christmas.

This one-off standalone story is a special Christmas treat for all fans of Hamish Macbeth and can be read at any point in the ongoing series.

Short- overpriced?- but sweet!

This should be read after Death of an Addict (Book 15/1999), & before Death of a Dustman ( Book 16/2001), making it 15.5, according to the FANTASTIC FICTION website. Otherwise, you might be puzzled by a new 'character' that appears in Death of a Dustman, without explanation.

Audible need to sort placing of the Christmas books by MC Beaton; I had the same issue when working my way through her Agatha Raisin novels, when I realised I had missed a key part of Toni's story. Thankfully, I discovered FANTASTIC FICTION's complete listings, which introduced me to an Agatha Raisin Christmas story I had missed.

Nerdy grumbling aside, I found this a very heartwarming tale, & am totally hooked on the combination of MC Beaton's witty tales & David Monteath's excellent narration.

But it is very short, & I think Audible have a cheek charging the same amount as a full Hamish Macbeth story! My MC Beaton addiction is costing me enough as it is!🙈

Entertaining

Put a smile on my face on a dreich afternoon. An appreciation of highland ways of days mostly past adds to the enjoyment. I could empathise with many of the incidents. I would recommend this light- hearted story.

Not book 1.5 book 15.5 labeled wrong

Well I enjoyed it, but audible has labelled it wrong which did ruin the read a bit. I just finished book one and was looking for the next in the series to listen to. This was labeled as 1.5 between 1 and 2 in the list on audible. I assumed it was a later book MC Beaton had written but set between 1 and 2. It was not. It supposed to be 15.5. Sort it out audible.

It was a nice easy Christmas time story about hamish Macbeth trying to solve some innocent crimes at Xmas, I did enjoy it but it did reference several plot points from previous books I hadn’t had the chance to read yet, because of audible mislabeling the order, which has spoilt them for me a bit.

A Christmassy escape!

A total pleasure to listen. Excellent narrator, bringing the characters to life, in particular Hamish Macbeth. The story is nothing startling but gentle and enjoyable. I'd definitely recommend for a few hours escape.

Seasonal mood setter

A story with lots of Christmas elements there is a tree and presents and an elderly character of scrounge like characteristics is shown to have a different side when given the company of a little girl who is lonely of course for some characters things do not go according to plan ! Will get you in a seasonal mood or simply act as a cheering tale if you are feeling a bit low.

Lovely short story

The kindness and generosity of a little village at Christmas along with Hamish’s quit wit and wise words is fabulous. Well worth a listen.

Ideal Christmas listening.

Well read story set in Scotland very pleasant and light. Great to listen to when you wrap presents. Accents all good. One reader who captures the different characters well (apart from the NY girlfriend. )
