About this listen

Sir Clement Carnell was the most domineering and strait-laced of fathers, and his death has left his grown children, Louisa and Valentine, with a sense of release. While Valentine throws open the Devonshire estate of Pennacombe to their fashionable cousins from London, Louisa feels free at last to reject the man her father chose as her prospective husband - Pearce Lynley.

Soon the temptations of Regency London beckon - including Lady Harriet Eversholt, beautiful, scandalous, and very married, with whom Valentine becomes dangerously involved; while Louisa finds that freedom of choice is as daunting as it is exciting. Will the opportunity to indulge, at last, in a little folly lead to fulfilment - or disaster?

If you have enjoyed Georgette Heyer regency novels those by Jude Morgan are even better. More complex, intelligently written and impeccably read by Phylleda Nash.

Great story matched with a wonderful narration

This was a recommendation from a Georgette Heyer group. I tried it, as it’s hard to find good Regency Romance novels once you’re a GH fan.

This is not in the style of GH, far more reviews liken the style to Jane Austen, perhaps it may be a combination of both, or perhaps it may just be like Jude Morgan. This is not a comedy of errors, nor is it a lighthearted romantic romp.
It is a gentle ‘coming of age’ story of 2 siblings who should have made their respective Come Outs a decade ago.

Faced with the new freedom that the restrictions imposed on them by their despotic father, now deceased, they take their tentative steps into society. First by opening up their home in Devonshire to neighbouring gentry who were not welcome during their father’s time and then, after hosting ‘estranged’ cousins, taking up their offer of a fortuitously extended season in London.

This is where (fortunately with their Devonshire friends) and easy going London family, they make their debut to the world. It’s not a tale of ravishing balls and humorous scrapes. It’s a tale of missteps, self awareness, friendships and a little folly.

Definitely worth investigating, especially with the delightful Phyllida Nash narrating.

Gentle, Unexpected Regency Tale

My first Jude Morgan listen and I could do with some more. A nice easy going and well written novel. Very good narration too.

I was looking for an heir to Georgette Heyer, this is sadly not it. Whilst Jude Morgan writes impeccably in the style of a Jane Austen novel, the characters did not really resonate with me, the plot seemed convoluted and rushed. I will give his writing another go, but mostly because Phyllida Nash reads them so enchantingly.

The story isn't as good as the narrator.

Simply the best regency novelist around. A scrumptious indulgence. I have read everything that this author has written, regency or otherwise and heartily recommend them all. Phyllida Nash is an ideal narrator, seeming to inhabit not only the characters, but the historical milieu in which they enact the story. Thank you.

One of my favourites

Sound story. A bit sad to start with during the brother and sisters formative years. A bit of a slog to get to the end. Could have shortened the first half of book. Nothing outstanding to refer to other than its a comfortable listen on a winters night. The narration is excellent and enabled me to listen to the end.

Good solid book

This charming and well written story was a delight. Whilst the author has his own 'voice' comparisons to Georgette Heyer and Jane Austen are well deserved, unlike many who aspire to the ideal. Morgan has a light, sure touch with well constructed characters and an eye for detail. The narration was good. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Good Regency

I had known Phyllida Nash from her reading of one of my all time favourite Heyers- Cotillion. Again in this book she is an utter joy to listen to!
I liked the book, thought it well written and refreshingly un-silly. I wish there were more of Jude Morgan's Regency novels available as audiobooks

A joy to listen to!

It warms my Devonian heart to have Teignmouth correctly pronounced as Tin-mith.
A charming, engrossing story.
A new author for me and I shall certainly look for more books by him.

Wonderful book, marvellous narration

A slow start, but stick with it. Jane Austen meets Georgette Heyer with style and wit. Excellently read too.
