About this listen
High adventure and dark mystery combine in a sparkling historical romance, by Jodi Taylor writing as Isabella Barclay from The Chronicles of St. Mary's.
Bascombe, widowed and tied to an impoverished estate, has learned to ask little of life. With no hope of leaving, the years have passed her by. Lord Ryde, exiled abroad after a scandal, has returned to strip his estate and make a new start in America. A chance encounter changes their plans, plunging Elinor and Lord Ryde into adventure and not a little peril until, finally, they are forced to confront the mystery of what happened on that night, all those years ago.
Are they both so entangled in the riddles of the past that they are about to miss this one last opportunity for future happiness?

An entertaining light read.
A lighthearted, entertaining book, set in an undetermined period, with some thrills.
The writing is good enough and in the standard modern taste. If you are expecting Georgette Heyer's flair, you won't find it here. Nor will you find anything of historical relevance.
I might have awarded 4 stars if it were not so expensive - £5.99 on kindle at the time of reading.
Te audio book is £13.12 at time of reading although I got it on the £3.00 sale day. The reader does a wonderful interpretation.

Short and sweet
Perfect book to flit through the hours with, well read with a simple story.
The dialogue between the characters is by far its most enjoyable feature.

Come into the Library Elinor ...................
Delightful, well written beautifully performed drama romance. What a lovely surprize this book has been. From the other comments I wasn't quite sure, but the reference to Ms Heyer won the day and I set my horse to jump the hedge to join Mrs Elinor Dascombe in this romp.
Jack/John is wallowing in his straightened circumstances, until the Dascombe entourage descends on him. This tale is so full of humour and laugh out loud events it is guaranteed to cheer up even the wettest day. The period style of the prose is a delight, even though only one bodice was removed in the course of the action.
The narrator put the icing on the cake. Her pace and style really make this a well above offering from Audible. I will certainly check out other books by this author and narrator (whom I stumbled on looking for something else entirely).

Just adorable!
I fell in love with this story. Eleanor and John make a wonderful couple with spirit and humour and of course love. Porlock the Butler is extremely capable as is Tilly. With her friends and Lord Ride's man Charles you have a thoroughly enjoyable story. I didn't want it to end.
