Summary
The merciless snow of the Scottish Borders. A case that freezes the blood.
Accustomed to the bustle of London, DI Rob Marshall finds himself confronted with the unforgiving Scottish winters he had long left behind. A gruesome discovery off the high road between Stow and Lauder sends shivers down his spine–a man and a woman, both frozen to death with their wrists and ankles bound. Left to suffer by someone with a sinister motive, or simply victims of the treacherous snowstorm?
As an expert in tracking serial offenders, Marshall is unprepared for a case with no leads, pushing him to rely on old-fashioned detective work, police experience he never gained as a direct entry. Desperate to find answers, he begins to see connections–but are they real or simply a trick of his trained instincts?
Marshall delves into the society of his childhood, coming face-to-face with bitter enemies and unearthing memories he thought he’d escaped when he left the borders. But as the shadows of his past creep closer, they threaten to turn his world upside down–and prove fatal.
In this riveting police thriller, Marshall must confront the demons of his past and race against time to unravel the truth behind a bone-chilling mystery.

Nice story but it was all about Angus for me
Like others have commented, this one wasn’t my favourite in the series so far. It felt a bit disjointed at times with random statements that weren’t clearly connected to the thread of the chapter.
However, I’ll happily listen to anything narrated by Angus King!! Looking forward to the next book in the series.

Unexciting
I couldn't warm to any of the leading characters and found the storyline to be unexciting and a touch overlong which is disappointing when I really enjoyed his other books in the series.

Wonderful narration
I agree with some earlier reviews that the book was too long for the plot. However, Angus King could make the telephone directory sound exciting so it was suitably entertaining overall - but not Ed James’ best

Strong fast moving
Enjoying this series and this is a strong addition. Characters becoming more rounded as the books go on. My only complaint is the mispronunciation of the village Stow, which should rhyme with now, not no. It was the location for a lot of the action so it would have been good to say it correctly.

Engaging characters unexpected plot twists
Ok so the attraction for this series was initially the location. This one didn’t fail me being set largely in BGH where I worked some years ago very happily. But Rob and the spiky women around him and the delightful Shunty are wonderful people to spend time with. Even the pompous idiot Pringle (who reminds me strongly of someone I once worked for)
The plots are engaging with some twists and I’ll happily listen for as many books as Ed James writes. Maybe one near Duns? Some shady characters over there too 😂

Entertaining
Not great literature but developing into characters you care about even though some are a bit far fetched. Good narration lends to its success with well defined character voices. My hope is that as the series developes we will see things tighten up and improve.

Great story line
the story draws you in amongst the characters while they toil through the ins and outs of this investigation.. while adding an insight to the personal lives of the detectives involved 10/10

Too long.
this book would be 10 times better if it was cut in half . the story line is not strong enough to carry it on for all that time. on the other hand it is a nice easy read.

Fantastic
Excellent audio book, although the village referred to should be pronounced Stow like cow.
