About this listen

The inimitable Daisy Dalrymple Fletcher and her husband Detective Chief Inspector Alec Fletcher seem to get a reprieve from their sleuthing duties when they are invited to the wedding of their friend, Lucy Fotheringay.

Lucy's grandfather is hosting the ceremony at his beautiful estate and so it promises to be a typical affair with hordes of gossipy aunts and other colorful, but not necessarily pleasant, relatives. Daisy meets all these characters and observes the ensuing familial fraternization with a certain kind of amusing nonchalance. That is, until Lucy's great aunt is found strangled to death in her bed. Lucy, in the meantime, has arranged to meet her betrothed in the conservatory, but when she arrives she finds him trying to revive her uncle, who has died - or has he been murdered? And just like that, a normally celebratory occasion turns suspicious. Now Daisy must sift through a throng of relatives - aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents - once wedding guests and now murder suspects. And she must find the killer quickly before another family member becomes a corpse.

A good tale and told well. I’ve previously stated that the story was overlong and filled with unnecessary information. Not this one.

It is a long story, but the reason for it is that there’s more than one crime to solve! Daisy can get a bit unnecessary at times (so that’s a bit of an irritant), but on the whole, this was a very interesting and intricate tale - with absolutely no guessing the outcome!

I hope the next one is as good!

Can’t Fault This!

Of all Daisy’s books I’ve listed to so far this was my favorite.
Yes, there are a lot of characters and it does get confusing at times, but the plot is not very “thick” and it’s easy to follow.
I found this adventure more entertaining that the previous ones, and I think this book could be turned into a fun tv movie.

Alec Fletcher is becoming a bit of an old bore and too fastidious for my taste, but alas his character is here to stay.

I don’t mind the reader too much, however it’s true that Daisy and most of the other female have annoyingly high pitched voices.

I’m a little addicted to these books, so I will definitely listen to the next one.

Easy listening, my favorite so far

Despite her best efforts the narrator is dreadful at voice characters and it gets in the way of the story. I think the mystery would be ok but does seem a bit cliched and weak in plot. Not the best cosy crime.

Narrator ruins story

A very enjoyable book kept guessing till the end, on the whole narration good, but I believe D I Fletcher's number two would have been much better spoken, found it a little irritating

Another ripping yarn

All the stories in the series are refreshingly different. Narration okay but main male character sounds overplayed. Some common words still annoyingly mispronounced. Into the next one though.

Entertaining light listening. Narration just about okay

A fun read with lively characters except for the plodding, ponderous and often petulant DCI Fletcher. He would never solve anything without Daisy, Tring and Piper. The narrator has a strange relationship with English pronunciation and does not seem to recognise French words at all.

Great story shame about the narrator

I really liked this one. The story was excellent - I did not see whoDunnit until Carola Dunn revealed it! The language, the atmosphere and the small historical details so characteristic of her excellent writing were spot on. And Lucy Rayner read it well. All in all, a good listen.

One of the best in the series, very well read

This was narrated by the same narrator as the previous one I listened to . Alec is narrated in a much better tone and much improved the listening experience . By later ones I know she is very good as time and experience progress so please persevere .

Much better narration worth persevering

Great stories. I shall be sorry when I have listened to the rest of them
