About this listen

The masterful new novel from the number one best-selling author of Small Great Things.

The Center for women's reproductive health offers a last chance at hope - but nobody ends up there by choice.

Its very existence is controversial, and to the demonstrators who barricade the building every day, the service it offers is no different from legalised murder.

Now life and death decisions are being made horrifyingly real: a lone protester with a gun has taken the staff, patients and visitors hostage.

Starting at the tensest moment in the negotiations for their release, A Spark of Light unravels backwards, revealing hour by urgent hour what brought each of these people - the gunman, the negotiator, the doctors, nurses and women who have come to them for treatment - to this point.

And certainties unwind as truths and secrets are peeled away, revealing the complexity of balancing the right to life with the right to choose.

Characters and dialogue

Fascinating debate about abortion with believable and sympathetic characters. I learn so much from reading Jodi’s books.

Hard work

First time I've listened to a Jodi picoult on audiobook but have read most of her collection. as other reviewers have said it was hard to tell when the prospective changed, but I don't know if this is a product of the style of book. it was quite an effort to make it to the end and lacked the impact ending normally associated with this author.

Needs to provide times as in hard copy

I normally love Picoults books, this is the first one I’ve listened to on audio and I found myself repeatedly getting lost. In the hard copy a time is given before each chapter for context but these aren’t spoken in the audio book. I found it took me a little bit to try and figure out where I was in the storyline at the start of each chapter which was distracting. If this was provided I would have given more stars.

Gripping and thought provoking

The subject matter of this book is a complex issue but the story is gripping, the characters intriguing and the format of the story unusual. Much of the book was enjoyable, the other parts thought provoking. It was well researched, well written and excellently narrated.

Pro life or not - thought provoking

Great story and well read. I am against abortion unless mums life is at risk and if a foetus is formed I do wonder how anyone can say it isn’t a human being!
A very thought provoking story

It was ok. Not one of my favourite

I normally love Jodi s books. But i was a bit disappointed. The story was ok but not deep enough and too jumpy for me.

Not as good as Her previous books!

I’ve read/listened to every book Jodi Picoult has written over the years, and class her as one of my favourite authors. I was really excited to hear another book was out.....however, despite it being a greatly emotive topic, as is the norm for Picoult, the story doesn’t Have the impact her others do. Yes it’s tackled well, from several points of view, but it doesn’t seem to go anywhere. There’s no real story and one of the characters story I feel would have actually made a great book itself! (The 17 year old who aborted her child herself and got arrested)

Great way to highlight another serious issue in America, I just wish it would have been as good as her other stories.

Confusing

The story does not follow a chronological timeline. It took me 8 chapters to work out it wasn't random, but going backward in time by an hour each chapter. Story was usual brilliant standard. Interesting, challenging, thought provoking. Just didn't find the device of playing with time added to the story. It just made it confusing

Took me a while to get into.

Not sure why but I found it hard to get into this audible book. The story does jump around a bit & I think with it being narrated, it sometimes wasn’t clear enough to me, that the story had changed to a different character, or from the past to the present & vice versa. That said it might just be me so don’t let me put you off.
