Summary

Since time immemorial, humans have worshipped the gods they call Fhrey, truly a race apart: invincible in battle, masters of magic, and seemingly immortal. But when a god falls to a human blade, the balance of power between humans and those they thought were gods changes forever. Now only a few stand between humankind and annihilation: Raithe, reluctant to embrace his destiny as the God Killer. Suri, a young seer burdened by signs of impending doom. And Persephone, who must overcome personal tragedy to lead her people. The Age of Myth is over; the time of rebellion has begun.

Sullivan does it again.

Another great book from Michael J. Sullivan. If you are someone who would like hours upon hours of great joy (and who wouldn't?) pickup any of Sullivan's books. TGR's narration of this audiobook is again fantastic - I hope when these books get adapted for movies/episodic long form (surely inevitable) that TGR appears in the live action movie/episodic long form.

I really enjoyed this audio book.

An interesting tale, but the writer needs to decide , what type of being is hidden in plain site, as the discrepancies in the way he describes this being make some of these vital parts of the story confusing.

Slow first book but it gets better...

I found this quite slow at first but by the end I was enjoying the characters enough to get the next book.
This first book is spent building the world and the characters more than pushing the plot. That pays off as the series gets better and better.

One of the most underrated series!

One of the most underrated series out there. I have been reading fantasy for many years and have often been left disappointed with so many like for like ripoffs from unimaginative authors but this is done wonderfully. The characters are lovable, multilayered and believably real. The world is imaginative and tangible and the story complex but not in a ‘difficult to follow’ way but in a ‘keep turning the pages’ way. I am now on book 5 and have come back to no 1 to leave a review in the Hope it will encourage others to join the adventure. You will at times laugh and at other times feel emotionally wounded as. It’s a story to stir the heart. I’m not looking forward to coming to the end.

Really Enjoyable

Really enjoyed the story, and couldn't wait to listen to book 2. Tim Reynolds is a great narrator and I admit am quite a fan of the books he's narrated.

Revisiting the dawn of a familiar world

Because of the way Michael writes there are things to come back to after reading outer book in the series, subtle hints and a deeper layer. I really enjoyed my second listen, and I am sure I will revisit it after the next book in the series is released.

Very Slow Start

This is a story about Persephone, wife of the leader of the Dahl Rhen, now deceased. Of Raithe of the Dureyan clan, a warrior, whose father Herkimer was killed by one of the gods. He then goes on the run with Malcolm, a Fhrey slave.

Persephone, now a widow, is not liked by the new clan head. One day she asks Suri if she will take her to talk to the oak tree. Off they go with Minna, the white wolf. Persephone asks the tree about the future and is told: “Welcome the gods; Heal the injured; Follow the wolf.” This puzzles Persophone, but it will not be long before the forecast starts to make sense.

Raithe and Malcolm come across Persephone, who is about to be murdered by 3 members of her clan. 2 are killed, one escapes.

The first sign of the forecast coming to pass is when 7 Fhrey turn up at the village, led by Nyphron, followed days later by Arion, a Miralyith who is tutor to the Crown Prince of the Miralyith. Why do I have a feeling that Nyphron is not as he seems and may well turn out to be not a very nice person.

This is a story of gods vs. man, with a few elves thrown in for good measure.

Once I got into the book it flowed quite well and I did enjoy it, but be prepared for a little endurance as the beginning was very slow.

A Surprise

I downloaded this as it was Included with my Audible membership, Tim Gerard Reynolds also narrating and I just hoped for the best. I have been very pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed the story, lots of interesting characters and the main protagonists are mostly women. They are definitely the most interesting. Some good action, plot twists and character development. Of course, the superb TGR is on hand to give it his unique vocal style. I like the foreword by the author too. I'm already listening to the Age of Swords. Keep up the good work Michael Sullivan 👏
