About this listen

A Primarchs Audiobook

Who better to relate the tale of Alpharius than the primarch himself? As he tells of his deeds, bear one thing in mind: nothing can be trusted when it comes from serpent's mouth.

Listen to it because:

I am Alpharius...and so are you.

The story:

Legends abound of the glorious - or infamous - deeds of the emperor's sons. Yet almost nothing is known of Alpharius, the most mysterious of them all, for the lord of the Alpha Legion is unparalleled in the art of obfuscation. Such are his gifts of secrecy and deceit that even his rediscovery has remained an enigma - until now. But when the tale comes from the serpent’s mouth, where do the lies end and the truth begin?

Written by Mike Brooks. Narrated by Jonathan Keeble.

The Raymond Reddington of 40K is here

Alpharius is closer to an Alastair MacLean or Frederick Forsyth novel than a regular 40k one, and delivers an incredibly exciting spy novel that would make a fantastic pilot for a spin-off series.

Brooks has taken Abnett's original Heresy novel 'Legion' and run with it, weaving a fresh tale that works perfectly as a standalone, and rewards those who've followed the Heresy in its entirety. It may be as Alpharius says, a complete fantasy or lies around a core of truth. In any case, you don't care in the slightest. Alpharius turns out to be so clever, so capable and so much fun that you don't care if he's making things up as he tells his tale - all you want to is to hear more.

Secrets within secrets

Of the Primarch novels that I’ve listened or read so far, most have been fun but forgettable romps that just emphasised the character of the Primarch.

This is much better, although a straightforward story, it tells a lot about how Alpharius became who he is and what impact his character had on the conflict that would later unfold and how the secrets and lies made everything so much worse

I am Alpharius

This is a great book exploring one of the oddest characters in Warhammer. This is not a lie.

Best book since the first trilogy

It begins with a deception and may end with one as well. Absolutely riveting book and gives me a whole new level of respect for 20th and its primarch(s). Keeble is great as always.

40k Autobiography

This is such a good way to tell a story, thought the many eyes of Alpharius. The audio performance, as always for Keeble, is fantastic. I actively seek out books that are read by him.

This is a lie

The best primarch novel in my opinion. It has a bit of everything you are looking for in a primarch book, emperor, malcador and primarch interactions and the story is really enjoyable. Has made me look at the alpha legion differently. Would recommend.
