About this listen

A Horus Heresy Anthology

In the final years of the Horus Heresy, all eyes were on the Siege of Terra. But out in the vast darkness of space, war raged over a thousand other worlds—including the home world of the Sons of Horus, Cthonia.

LISTEN TO IT BECAUSE

Witness the bitter, spiteful struggle between the Imperial Fists and the Sons of Horus over the Warmaster's home planet of Cthonia, in seven stories from a variety of authors.

DESCRIPTION

After seven long years of conflict, the Horus Heresy nears its end. But now, as the Warmaster Horus marches on Terra to rip his father from the Throne, the seat of the arch-traitor’s power lies empty. Cthonia, a world once dominated by brutal murder-gangs, is occupied by the Emperor’s praetorians—the indomitable Imperial Fists. For the Sons of Horus, this outrage demands a reckoning. From the towering heights of Traitor’s Gate, stronghold of the VII Legion, to the unending warrens in the planet’s crust, the two sides slaughter one another without remorse. It is a war of spite, and only the most ruthless will rise to claim Cthonia.

He makes all the characters sound like characters sound like 1950s English schoolchildren.

“We will need to harvest the dead for meat” delivered with the same gravity as “Don’t be late for school, Alfie, otherwise the headmaster will be very cross!”

Find it hard to get past when he’s describing a bloody charnel house with the same tone he would describe a family picnic.

It’s like he’s reading Enid Blyton or something.

It was the same with the dark angels novels he read.

Gareth Armstrong isn’t very grimdark

To the Last. Flesh Harvest and Postulant are by far the best stories in this anthology and I have to say that disappointed me as I was very hopeful for tales of cthonia and yet so little was given

The good, the goodish and the good?

Overall not bad but I didn't really get much of a sense of what was actually going on over the entire conflict and the outcome of the battle. To The Last was an exceptional void battle though and I'd buy the book just for that.

Interesting shorts but didn't add much overall

To the Last is genuinely excellent with arguably the best Horus Heresy era void battle I can recall and the others are fine as shorts but as a collection doesn't really add to the overall story arc. Overall I'd say worth purchasing in a sale (as I did) but otherwise probably not worth a full credit in its own right.

Interesting but doesn't add to the main story

Just not long enough. It is never enough. Throughly enjoyed all the short stories and I mean short. So keep them coming. More always more. It is never done

Very good

went into this not expecting much, but ended up loving it. High recommended to all Warhammer fans

a surprising good book

Cthonia hasn't really been in the books much and this actively feels like it adds nothing to the story of the heresy and seige. The stories are nice little snippets but the addition of this book adds nothing to the overarching story. No important characters. No plot impacting events. Just fights.
Good if that's what your after but not worth a credit for me.

Adds nothing to the overall story.

An anthology of short stories around the siege of Cthonia, the second entry is the standout as it explores space battles and tactics which are rarely explored in 40k stories.

However, the other stories are all little more than bolter-porn. suitably written but not as gripping as other stories set in the Horus Heresy

A middling anthology with one standout story

....so so stories. None really stood out or really added anything. I understand not all the short stories can be gold but this collection at least for me was very weak. As always the narrator of each story were great and did the absolute best they could with the material they had. Quite skippable and for me it didnt add anything to the Heresy or Siege.

Quite disappointing....

The only good story was French's. The three stories after felt like they were written by a Star Trek: Discovery fan. Not good enough.

Bad. Couldn't finish
