About this listen

A Lucille Von Shard Novel

Flight Commander Lucille Von Shard is an ace pilot in the Aeronautica Imperialis, with a bit of a chip on her shoulder. Follow her as she faces off against the aerial forces of the orks.

Listen to it because

High-flying dogfights unfold in the skies above Bacchus, as the Imperium clash with orks, and an arrogant hotshot uncovers a secret that could doom the entire planet.

The story

The Aeronautica Imperialis are the masters of the skies in the 41st millennium, waging wars of breakneck aerial combat where only skill stands between victory and death. Flight Commander Lucille von Shard is an ace, a living exemplar of what it means to fly in the name of the Emperor… or so Propagandist Kile Simlex is told.

Braving the foetid waters of Bacchus and its rampaging greenskin hordes, Simlex is tasked with producing a cinema-pict portraying Shard as an Imperial hero. Shortly after his arrival planetside, however, he discovers the war effort is in shambles—the Imperium’s overstretched forces are in full retreat, the local planetary governor is desperately downplaying the conflict at every turn, and Shard is an arrogant misanthrope who only avoids sanction due to her consummate skills.

But these skills may prove the only hope of survival, for something vast and terrible lurks within the clouds. The Green Storm approaches.

likeable story

interesting way to tell the tale since it covers enough of the 40k feel with a good enough rationale for any hand waving details

Really enjoyed this one!

Loved the characters and the plot. Really hope this becomes a series like Gaunts Ghosts. Definitely recommend. If you enjoyed Double Eagle then I’m sure you’ll enjoy this too!

Great story and complex characters and great ending. Listened on way to work kept me sane on many a journey. One of the gems on audible books.

Wasn't sure, but glad i did

i was a little unsure initially about this book as i normally prefer ground pounder style infantry stories. But this book blew me away, a fantastic story read by a supurb voice actor.

Superb penmanship

This is without a doubt the best Black Library entry I've read over the past many years. Superb penmanship, fantastic characters, great atmosphere at just the right scale. Denny Flowers has immediately joined my favourite authors. A brilliant book.

To me, that's a Wednesday

Is what I would imagine Lucille would say if forced to regale this story.

The characters are well fleshed out, and the interactions between Simlex and Lucille are particularly juicy.

An enjoyable romp.

A unique 40k war story in the same vein as Platoon

Denny Flowers understands the setting and presents us with familiar themes from a fresh perspective while looking into the overlooked fighter pilots of the 41st millenium. I really love the uses he has found for servoskulls which are so prominent in the art but rarely even mentioned in novels and the planet. Phillip Sacramento really sells this one. It made me pick up the Lucille Von Shard short stories.

Absolutely superb...

To see another Aeronautica novel was due for release had me very excited as they're relatively rare - as a fan of the tabletop Aeronautica Imperialis game and someone who absolutely loved Double Eagle, I couldn't wait to check this out and hoped it would live up to my expectations.

However, Denny Flowers' writing ( and Phillip Sacramento's performance) flew right over those expectations and delivered an absolutely superb tale that had me hooked from the first few minutes right until the very end. The action was wonderfully done and immersive, the political intrigue was handled expertly and the underlying almost WW2-esque aspect that the Aeronautica Imperialis setting touches upon was just right in my opinion.

There are arrogant aces, waxed moustaches, airborne antics and a very generous amount of dakka - all the important parts of a good Warhammer 40,000 air-war...and that's without even considering the plot itself!

Hopefully we see another installment or two of these as I, for one, would love to read and listen to more and Outgunned will definitely be a tale I come back to again and again.
