Summary

Tom Crean was the farmer’s son from Kerry who sailed on three major expeditions to the unknown Antarctic over a century ago. He served with both Captain Robert Scott and Sir Ernest Shackleton, spent longer on the ice than either and outlived them both.

But Tom Crean returned to Ireland and never spoke about his exploits, taking his incredible story to the grave – until the publication of An Unsung Hero, which unearthed his story and saw him rightfully placed amongst the annals of the great explorers.

what a life, what a story!

the famous expeditions of Scott and Shackleton told from Tom Crean's perspective.
His early life, running away to join the navy. Many unfamiliar heroics of saving many fellow travellers lives told here and the measure of the man is unveiled. beautifully told and narrated.

Tom Creen the giant shoulders others sat upon.

One big story in three episodes. I camped in Norway in the Winter and experienced minus 50 temps, but not for years, under the conditions described in this book. BZ !

Inspirational figure from beginning to the end.

A very inspirational person and on par with great explorers like Shakelton, Scott and Amundsen. The characteristics of Tom Creen are superior and with great humility. A very good book that definitely is worth listening to besides the Endurance, which is also a great book told from Shakelton perspective.

Tom Crean: An Unsung Hero

Yeah More than likely One of Ireland's greatest All Time Hero and this book does do Him that justice. I read this book on release, 20 years ago before making the mistake of loaning it to someone (& never getting it back). Recently decided to download and listen to it on Audible and yeah it still lives up to the first time round, read. If you want to hear of "What Tough Irish" is then......
