Summary

Penguin presents the audio edition of Around the World in 80 Days, written and read by Mark Beaumont.

The inspiring story of one man's record-breaking cycle around the world.

On Monday 18th September 2017, Mark Beaumont pedalled through the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. 78 days, 14 hours and 40 minutes earlier he set off from the same point, beginning his attempt to circumnavigate the world in record time. Covering more than 18,000 miles and cycling through some of the harshest conditions one man and his bicycle can endure, Mark made history. He smashed two Guinness World Records and beat the previous record by an astonishing 45 days.

Around the World in 80 Days is the story of Mark’s amazing achievement - one which redefines the limits of human endurance. It is also an insight into the mind of an elite athlete and the physical limits of the human body, as well as a kaleidoscopic tour of the world from a very unique perspective; inspired by Jules Verne’s classic adventure novel, Mark begins his journey in Paris and cycles through Europe, Russia, Mongolia and China. He then crosses Australia, rides up through New Zealand and across North America before the final 'sprint finish' thorough Portugal, Spain and France, all at over 200 miles a day. This is the story of a quite remarkable adventure, by a quite remarkable man.

Real good listen

What an achievement 👏 incredible feet of endurance.
I would have liked to hear a little more at the end on the recovery process but all in a great Story.

Stunning description of what it really takes...

Mark puts you right inside his own mind through the physical and mental torture that he went through to achieve his dream. He is incredibly honest about how he and his amazing team dealt with all the challenges that faced them. An utterly enthralling book and highly recommended.

extraordinary journey

A wonderfully authentic and gritty narrative; Mark conveys in this book, perhaps more than his others, the logistical and emotional challenges faced whilst undertaking such a challenge. Mark's narrative, interspersed with video diary, is easy on the ear. The only negative, at times Mark comes across as a bit whinny towards his team; this dominates to an extent, the early part of the book. Otherwise, a great listen.

Incredible story or endurance

Being a keen cyclist I loved every minute hearing of his incredible feat of endurance and what it mentally takes to be a cyclist of that magnitude.

The inclusion of the audio from the daily video clips was interesting, hearing how his body and voice changed over the 80 days.

A fantastic listen.

An absolute joy to listen to. Having followed Mark for some time now i know how hard and far he can push himself and how thorough he is with his planning, but the ride around the world in 80 days was a massive undertaking which he not only rose to, but also documented in a most accurate and logical way. Not to mention written and read in a fantastic manner. If your not into your "extreme" sports or adventures, this is still a great read/listen. Plus the fact Mark reads to book is a great bonus. A plus.
