About this listen

Lust. Ambition. Murder.

When a beautiful, wealthy student is found dead in her room in Oxford's most prestigious college, Detective Inspector Bridget Hart is called to investigate. The murdered girl appeared to have no enemies, yet was killed in a brutal and bloody assault.

Haunted and driven by her own personal tragedy, newly promoted DI Bridget Hart has a lot to prove as she leads her first murder case. Her investigation uncovers a tangled web of lies, lust and ambition, and brings her into conflict with powerful interests.

But no one can be above suspicion within the closed and claustrophobic confines of an Oxford college, where students and academics live and work side by side, and a ruthless killer waits to strike again.

Enjoyed this except for some awful accents. Good story and a chilling end. Will look for more.

Good

I was disappointed with the way senior police officers were portrayed in this and other books by this author. Senior officers do not talk to other ranks in such a demeaning way or call them by rank they use Christian names. As an ex officer I am in a position to point this out . Otherwise a really good read and the narrator is excellent.

Good strong story line

The story revolves around rich and entitled families and doesn’t draw you in. The characters are fairly one dimensional and stereotypical. That said it flows and is easy on the ear but the narration has a slightly condescending tone. Not a favourite but ok listen

Not gripping

Have never seen anything by this author before and I was very pleasantly surprised. Well written and beautifully narrated. I will look out for more.

Pleasant surprise

I enjoyed the story. I thought I had the killer down but turns out I was wrong.

One thing that detracted a lot was the seemingly endless amount of “why can’t I be that slim” comments or thoughts from the main character. She’s trying to catch a murderer, she’s got other things to worry about.

Not bad, but why all the body comments?

This was a very well written story and equally a very good narration.
The end plot came as a surprise but on reflection a very logical conclusion
I will look for more from this author

Very enjoyable

Classic crime, got what I came for. Although..why oh WHY does ALL female detectives have to be so bloody aware of their weight?? Even female writers do this, and I find it so belittling and unneccessary. Narrater ok.

Straightforward crime

New author for me. Thoroughly enjoyed the plot and production. Some repetition of scenarios was unnecessary - it’s not as if you would start listening halfway through and needed a summary. But will definitely listen to some more by the author.

Nice!

I like this new DI but I still think the author can give more life to the character. I’ll probably read the next one just to see if it gets more interesting

Exciting

I thoroughly enjoyed this detective novel, which led us down some splendid culs de sac before its marvellously (melo)dramatic conclusion. The authors certainly know Oxford! Esther Wane's narration was also very well suited to the material.

Great Aspirations
