Summary
At the Mountains of Madness tells the first-person tale of geologist William Dyer, a professor from Miskatonic University in the USA. He writes to disclose hitherto unknown and closely kept secrets in the hope that he can deter a planned and much publicized scientific expedition to Antarctica. For he has been there and seen the unimaginable horrors that lay beyond the mountains.
At the Mountains of Madness was written by HP Lovecraft in 1931, originally a serialised story published in Astounding Stories magazine in the US. While considered by fans to be part of the Cthulhu Mythos stories that HPL is most famous for, some academics argue that the author was actually ‘demythologising’ much of his earlier work.
Whichever it is, the story is massively popular, and there are talks of a movie adaptation by Steven Spielberg and Guillermo Del Toro in the offing. This 2010 adaptation comprises 5 episodes, originally aired on BBC Radio 4 Extra, and offered here in exclusive Extended Editions.

Vivid, disturbing and utterly brilliant
Lovecraft paints a vivid picture of the gradual descent into horror and abomination using the cold scientific methodology of a group of explores seeking to broaden human knowledge. What they encounter on their voyage into the depths is almost beyond description and signals a journey into the horrible, terrifying unknown.
Brilliantly read and atmosphericly told.

Classic HP Lovecraft
An Anarchic horror with a mass of Cthulu myths to digest. This is one of my favourite stories by HP Lovecraft, and Richard Coyle's narration is excellent.

short fairly self-contained and enjoyable
liked this. Not too long, a few liberties in protagonists actions but overall a good listen. Enjoyed the reading and presentation too.

Exhilarating experience

so full of life
Richard Coyle brings Lovecraft to life as I haven't heard before. the at times rather impenetrable text is clearly & fantastically read with the occasional voice acting just adding to it. more in this series, please!!

The better way for me to 'read' Lovecraft
I've heard often that this story (along with many other works of Lovecraft) was and is very influential however the type of reader I am struggles with his style of writing.
If you are like me then Richard Coyle's reading is definitely the thing to try, I found the story more engaging and enjoyable when framed by the narrator and would recommend anyone who can sometimes struggles with this writing style to give it a try.
All in all you can see why this tale is as influential as it is and I enjoyed thinking of films, games and other stories that have taken it as a muse.

A nice change of pace
The perspective that this story is told from and the scientific approach the characters take during the book and how they describe things, is extremely refreshing and different from anything I've read before.
