About this listen

If you want to discover the captivating life of Augustus, then pay attention...

The life of Augustus is historically important because his leadership marked out a new era in the story of the Roman world - an era that would see the expansion of the Roman Empire across the Mediterranean and beyond. However, the influence of the Roman Empire extended much farther than its territory and had a profound effect on the development of Western culture.

Moreover, the stories and legends that emanate from the Roman world have become part of the cultural consciousness of the Western world today. Our fascination with the Roman world is boundless. There are thousands of movies, books, plays, and video games that are inspired by ancient Rome. The stories of the lives of great Romans have, in turn, become stories and ideas that have been taken up by everyone, from Shakespeare to the Star Wars franchise.

What is absolutely fascinating about the story of Augustus is the way that he masterminded his ascent to power: by leading people to believe that power was the last thing he wanted, so that, as a leader, he was willingly accepted - and often demanded - by the people. At the same time, he also proved indispensable to the Senate, whose job it was to check his power.

In Augustus: A Captivating Guide to the First Emperor of Rome and How He Ruled the Roman Empire, you will discover chapters such as:

  • Early Career
  • Caesar’s Son

Highly recommended

This audible presents simply (sometimes it seems more a novel than a non-fiction book) and gives a great of information. Yet, I have to say that some of the claims the author make seem personal theories or ideas rather than true facts.

Interesting man

let us be grateful for the truth that he will rule in the light of your knowledge and power, and let us pray to the gods that, under Nero, Rome will, at last, achieve the dream of Octavius Caesar’. Sadly, of course, from history, we understand that it didn’t and that Nero was a monster.

First Emperor of Rome and his Rule

You may believe you know the story of the first Roman Emperor, but this is a very fresh and unique take on the most successful Roman leader, told by created letters and records. This provides the broadly historical story a compelling clarity and personal depth.

Great information!

A lot of social insertion about the man who protected the Roman Republic from death by chaos. A fine AUDIObook, IMHO.

lots of info

Augustus has forever intrigued me, ever since I noticed I Claudius as a child. His adopted father Julius Caesar gets most of the attention but in many ways, Augustus was the more successful of the two and as a Roman emperors go one of the most famous. Yet, there are very few books on Augustus.

very absorbing

All of the narrators have their plan and information, so the story builds up like a collection but nevermore feels random or chaotic. It might help to know a tiny bit about the period before learning this!

Power struggles at the age of nineteen,

Augustus skilfully developed the role of emperor, co-opting the major families and politicians of Rome into a system that proved stable for the four decades of his rule.
