About this listen
Against all odds, a defiant street rat takes on a ruthless empire.
Pax, a cunning street rat without a class, navigates life in a city constantly threatened by monstrous beast waves. He's dedicated to keeping his crew safe and fed, especially after his family vanished without a trace. But when his best friend is captured, Pax risks it all—even his freedom—on the eve of the Awakening.
Caught and thrust into the Astan Empire's war machine, Pax must adapt to survive the perils of the empire's elite mage academy. While struggling to harness the forbidden magic surging within him, he must avoid the attention of corrupt leaders determined to snuff out any hint of rebellion and maintain their iron grip on power.
With ancient secrets, and long-lost spells at stake, can Pax triumph against his foes, defeat fearsome monsters, and secure a future for himself and his crew?

One you can’t stop listening to
I won an audible code and have to say I have bought the kindle book since.
The main MC and his friends are believable, the story sucks you in (a - I’ll just listen to one more chapter..) and more importantly keeps you interested. This is a super start, can’t wait for book 2, my only compliant.. I have to wait for book 2 on audible!
Spoilers!
Under siege, battling beasts on the walls, a street rat - Pax gets caught and forced to undergo a ceremony to get a full menu, almost dieing in the process, he becomes a mage. Bundled off the capital he finds one of his street gang is with him, they join with a third and this story is about them navigating the academy, the flicks, beasts (who shouldn’t be in the walls!) but he isn’t just any mage.. he is a light mage.. can he and his friends keep it a secret as he develops his powers!

Interesting start
I really liked this story. The main characters are a bit different being described as street rats being forced to attend a mage academy. Very different but very enjoyable. Looking forward to next one.

A must have for all readers/listeners
This is my fourth time going through this story, twice on royal road/patreon, then the Kindle version and now the audible version. Physical copy to follow in the near future, probably another reread before book 2 launches :)
I just can't get enough of Pax's story. The characters, the plot, the system, and even the politics are all fantastic.
Honestly, I can't recommend this story enough

An Immersive Journey into 'Awakening Horde' - A LitRPG Gem
As a newcomer to the enchanting realm of LitRPG, "Awakening Horde" was only my second foray into this unique genre. I found myself thoroughly captivated by the book's enthralling narrative and the way it seamlessly blended the elements of gaming with a richly developed fantasy world.
From the very first pages this YA book managed to pull me into its virtual universe, much like the popular non-LitRPG titles 'Fourth Wing' and 'The Magician' had done in the past. The storytelling was masterfully crafted, allowing me to form a genuine connection with the characters almost instantly. This immediate investment drew me deeper into the story, compelling me to journey alongside the protagonists as they navigated the challenges of their new world.
We follow a tenacious street rat, Pax, who defies the odds against a ruthless empire. Pax's determination to protect his crew in a city besieged by monstrous beasts.
Without giving away the story Pax’s journey with his friends lead to places he had never imagined and tests loyalty, friendships, secrets and trust to survive.
Pax's struggle as he navigates the elite mage academy of the Astan Empire highlights the author's ability to intertwine captivating world-building with relatable characters. A journey to harness forbidden magic while avoiding the empire's corrupt leaders showcases resilience and determination of the friends.
In a realm where fantasy and strategy collide, this book is an unmissable addition to your reading list.
