A HAPPY PLACE BOOK CLUB PICK

I have lived on London's piss-soaked streets, I have lived with the sweet embrace of heroin, I have lived when I should have died. I have lied, I have thieved, I have stripped, I have tricked, I have loved, I have fallen, I have survived.

I could be your daughter, your mother, your lover - I could be you.

Come to hell and back with me.

This is an unmissable read—raw, unflinchingly honest, and at times deeply uncomfortable. It confronts the pivotal ‘sliding door’ moments that shape our lives, for better or worse, and holds a mirror to the choices we make. Bold, courageous, and incredibly inspiring, this book doesn’t just tell a story but makes you reflect on life and the daily struggles everyone faces.

Incredibly brave book

A cult book for future generations. Above and beyond all the junkie cliches of this type of literature.

So raw! So honest!

I couldn’t press pause on this clear eyed memoir of life as a teenage runaway. Narrated by author Lorna Tucker, her descriptions are vivid and cinematic, leading the listener by the hand into the shadow world of Soho she once inhabited.

Unflinching and never self pitying, this is not an ‘easy’ listen, but an important one. She skilfully threads together the events that led a troubled early teen into the wrong crowd, how one small catastrophe led to another, and how vulnerable so many troubled girls looking for love are to the nefarious intentions of predatory older men.

By the end my cheeks were wet and my solar plexus ached. I am full of admiration for the author. We must do more to stop young people falling through the cracks of society.

Gut wrenchingly brilliant and moving.

Brave, honest, descriptive, thank you for sharing your story! You will smile, you will cry but it will have you hooked

With something as powerful as this, I choose an audiobook as I really want to hear it in the author's words. It was heartbreaking to learn how life could so easily spiral for a teen. As a mother myself, I was yearning for her to phone her mum and go home. So much trauma to overcome and an important story of hope on the other side.

Such a powerful story and one that is so important to be heard

Gracefully narrated without sensationalism or gore making its impact even greater. A sorry but ultimately hopeful tale.

Powerful and authentic

I wanted to listen to this book after hearing Lorna on Radio 4. Amazing story of a truly brave woman with a beautiful voice. Although it is a harrowing story, I carried on listening because I wanted to learn more about a life I know so little about. There but for the grace of god - I was brought up in a very privileged family, but I think no of us are so far away from a life like Lorna’s. Lorna, I hope you carry on living a calm and happy life.

Brave book, and a must listen
