I was very excited by the synopsis of this book and couldn’t wait to start reading. It wasn’t quite what the title led me to believe. The term ‘Ripper’ in the title made me think this would be a slasher type book, perhaps a little like the movie Wolf Creek. Instead I would say this book has more in common with Stephen King’s Misery.
I did enjoy the book which is very dark and disturbing. There was a deep sense of foreboding running through it. All the time you just knew something bad was going to happen! This sense of foreboding was helped by the descriptions of the crumbling ex hospital, Mabel House. The fact that Paige was alternately strong and then weak made her character believable. The character of Soona broke my heart and I was glad to read that after the events of the book she was being looked after in a care home.
The ending of the book was satisfying and although we’re not told by the writer, I hope that Paige will be able to have another child.
Creepy Aussie thriller
