About this listen
She's an awkward bookworm. He's a fictional character in her favorite book.
When Barbara “Barbi” Bancroft mysteriously receives an unreleased manuscript from her favorite book series, she can’t curb her excitement. But when she gets sucked into the story—literally—she finds herself in the fantastical realm of Akkaya. Immediately, she thinks this is the adventure of a lifetime and she will finally meet her Prince Charming, and maybe have her first kiss.
But things don’t go her way, and soon she is running for her life.
Her only hope to survive and get home is the heroic Sir Damien, her fictional crush.
Unfortunately, he is anything but heroic and he decides to sacrifice her in an evil ritual that will allow him to invade her world—and conquer it.
Channeling her main character energy, Barbi tries to run and outsmart Sir Damien. And that is how she ends up thrown in a dungeon, waiting for her death.
With the villain of the story.
Forming an unlikely alliance with the most hated character wasn’t in Barbi’s bingo card, but she will do anything to save herself and her world.
Things become further complicated when she accidentally gets mated to said villain, and now she’s trapped forever.
Or is she?
This is a DARK fantasy romance with a villainous love interest. Please check the triggers before listening.

Dark romance with Grumpy x Sunshine mixed in
Barbi is a saccharine sweet bookworm who inadvertently ends up in the universe of her favourite book series and is trying to get home. Initially I thought this was going to be more of a romcom but the story takes a darker turn as Barbi is betrayed by the world she has made such a big part of her life and nothing is as it seems.
I'm not usually a solo narrator fan but I loved Adrienne Fleming's performance. She really brings out the bubbly naïve side of Barbi but also the stark changes in her after a couple of truly devastating turns in the story. It is a single POV book but Fleming's male character performances are just as strong which is a make or break for me in a solo narrator listen.
My heart broke for Barbi at the start where her friends admit they never really liked her and were just using her. Barbi is written in such a way that you could see how she could be perceived as being "too much" from her first impressions and it just made me feel so sad when she talked about how she thought she had found her people after being a bit of a loner. Once Barbi's humour started to come through I just loved her; the way she doubled down on her fibs just cracked me up, especially the whole being the Dark One's heart monologue. Some of her one liners were pretty epic as she pokes fun at fantasy age gaps, possessive mates and the general situation she is in.
The pacing did slow down a bit for me towards the last third but I enjoyed that actual time seemed to be passing and the relationship between Barbi and her mate was given room to grow beyond their initial attraction. The turn this book takes towards the end had my head spinning and I don't want to spoil any of it; I knew something was coming up the wing but I was genuinely devastated when we got there.
Barbi and The Villain really took me by surprise and I am so intrigued to see where a second and third book are going to go next.

wow this is 🔥🔥
I read the book of barbi and the villain and I absolutely loved it so I decided to listen to it and omg this is even better in audible. I love the way the narrator uses different tones for the characters and I love how she does nykanders accent and Barbi's sarcasm. This was my first Audiobook and I didn't know what I was missing now I know listening to a book is just as good as reading it.
