About this listen
Beauty and The Beast meets The Bachelor and The Selection.
Aeryn is hungry, perpetually exhausted, and short on hope. Ever since her merchant father lost everything to pirates, the 22-year-old has worked endlessly to meet the needs of her impoverished family. But it's never enough.
That all changes when a mysterious faerie invites her to a competition hosted by a Fae beast looking for a wife. Tor, the castle-dwelling creature, is wealthy enough to provide for Aeryn's family, and she's desperate enough to say yes.
The castle is beautiful, straight out of Aeryn's dreams. Tor is more suited to her nightmares, with his red eyes, long claws, and rat-like tail. But looks can be deceiving....
Then there are the other contestants, nine powerful faerie females. Aeryn is a mortal. How is she supposed to compete with their otherworldly beauty—and thwart the curse magic some of them wield?
The complicated situation quickly turns impossible for Aeryn. As her romance with Tor progresses, she also finds herself drawn to Wyatt, the castle gardener. He's nothing like the powerful Tor, yet Aeryn's feelings for him keep blurring the lines between friendship and attraction.
Winning Tor's heart is the only way Aeryn can save her family. But can she fend off the attacks of powerful faerie females, ignore her growing desire for Wyatt, and let herself fall for a monster?
If you like fairytale retellings, bookish heroines, love triangles, and a little bit of steam, you'll love Beauty and Deceit.
This story is romantic with mild steam. The intimacy is open door, but with minimal explicit detail. Written for NA (new adult) audiences, appropriate for ages 16 and up.

Excellent
Loved this retelling. It was a really strong story-line, with enough intrigue to keep it compelling reading and to have it be different from the original. I loved the strength of the female main character. This was a pleasure to read.

Beauty and the Beast meets The Bachelor,
This year apparently is the Beauty and the Beast retelling year, so this is not the first book I read in this line.
I have to admit that the “the Bachelor” vibes added to the story, making it funnier than expected, and the final twist to the story was probably my favorite part.
Easy-to-listen and all in all enjoyable.

Enjoyable
I really enjoyed this book and the narrator who just so happens to be the author. Easy to listen to and not too steamy. It’s the usual beauty and the beast retelling but the twist is it’s like a dating show where the beast has to choose from a selection of beauty’s. Aeryn is selfless, sacrificing everything for her family and only enters the competition to provide for her family. It’s a satisfying listen and I would recommend it. This book was provided free for my unbiased review.

Beauty & the Beast with a hint of The Batchelor
This is much more than a retelling of “Beauty and the Beast” as Carol has added so much to the story. Aeryn has been struggling to provide for her family and when her father spends the month’s earnings at the bar, she takes him to go foraging in the woods. He hurts his leg and when trying to get help she finds herself in a castle grounds.
She’s told there is a competition to win the heart of the beast who lives there, and she’s the last of the ten contestants to arrive: the rest all being fairies. She agrees in return for her family being cared for. When she meets the Beast, she notes he has a caring side to him and makes friends with some of the fairies wanting to win his heart. Though not everyone's friendly and she discovers curse magic is one of 4 types that can and will be used to win the competition.
There are some fabulous twists in this and a lot of secrets, from the different reasons each lady is taking part, the truth behind the curse on the castle and inhabitants; to how is the gardener, Wyatt, the only other male in the grounds. I loved the friendship she forms with the small snake and how all the fairies are so different in looks and character.
A beautiful slow burn romance which I could not put down and enjoyed listening to it just as much, with Carol bringing all of the characters to life.
