Summary

When a plane crashes into the Antarctic ice, exposing a massive cave beneath, a rescue and research team is dispatched. Twenty-four hours later, all contact is lost. Captain Alex Hunter and his highly trained squad of commandos are fast tracked to the hot zone to find out what went wrong - and to follow up the detection of a vast underground reservoir. Accompanying the team is an assortment of researchers, including petrobiologist Aimee Weir. If the unidentified substance proves to be an energy source, every country in the world will want to know about it - some would even kill for it. Once inserted into the cave system, they don't find any survivors - not even a trace of their bodies. Primeval hieroglyphs hint at an ancient civilisation, and an ancient danger. Spectres of the dead haunt the tunnels. Within hours, one of the party will die. To bring his team out alive, Alex will need every one of his mysterious abilities beneath the dark ice.

Great read

I really enjoyed this story. Lots of action and violence. I always enjoy books with scientific information. So interesting!

Fantastic, and yet rather predictable

Creative setting, albeit with some plot holes, let down by hard to believe lead character and cheesy relationship with the love interest.

Flat narration.

Won't be buying any more of Mr Beck's work.

worth a read, but not a favourate

the writing style was pretty basic. the character building only centered on a very limited cast and could have gone deeper and into others, the narration was basic without any attempted voice alteration for different characters so I found it pretty one dimensional. but, it was still a good yarn and I got to the end so couldn't of been that bad!

OH DEAR....

I really don't like to write negative reviews, I held off getting this due to other reviews, but eventually thought I would give it a go.
I have no problem with the far fetched plot, I like a bit of trash as much as the next guy, BUT the main character, the super soldier... I didn't realise he really was a SUPER soldier!

SPOILER alert... in that he had been shot, bit of shrapnel lodged in his head has now literally given him super human powers. Increased strength so he regularly hurls around people twice his size with one arm! Can hear a mouse fart a mile away and intuits enemies coming from miles away, through some sixth sense. Oh and of course he's dashingly handsome, ripped and pipped... in his fifties.

SORRY but that was simply too much for me. A bunch of people trapped, against all the odds, fair enough. But if this guy has all these powers it hardly counts does it?

Anyway, sad to say, I couldn't even finish it.

Narrator - top notch, great job.
If your'e into Marvel and the X-men etc, this would appeal.

IF you're looking for equally outlandish plots, isolated locations, cat and mouse games of people being knocked off one by one, possible supernatural elements, some far fetched creatures etc. Try Lincoln Child - Terminal Freeze. OR some of Michael McBride.

Good listen

Not my usual kind of book. I was kept interested in the story really enjoyed the narration. Liked the unusual line of the story a bit of a what if under different conditions thing develop vastly different way. I did want to get to the end and it was good yarn getting to there.
