About this listen

100,000 years ago the object hit the lake at the deepest point, quickly sinking into its mile-deep stygian darkness. The sheets of ice closed, time moved on and the land forgot.

But over the centuries, legends grew of people vanishing, of strange, deformed animals and of an unexplained luminescence down in the lake depths.

When Marcus Stenson won the lucrative contract to create a sturgeon fish farm on the site of disused paper mill on the shore of Lake Baikal, he thought he had won the lottery and refused to listen to the chilling folktales, or even be concerned by the occasional harassment from the local mafia.

But then animals were found mutilated in the frozen forest and people started to go missing. And worse, some came back, changed, horribly. In the depths of the lake, something that had been waiting 100,000 years was stirring. And it needed the warmth of mankind to survive.

For lovers of John Carpenter’s The Thing, comes a tale of Alien Horror from international best selling author, Greig Beck.

Really enjoyed this book.

I have never heard of the author . However I am a fan now and can see he has written many books which I now really look forward to discovering listening to. I'm happy as this will keep me going for some time. Often I am disappointed with a lot of books but I still listen to most of them to the end. This book was well written with a great story that had me engaged early on and I knew I was going to enjoy it. Also, the narrator did a great job skilfully bring it alive. I thought he did a great job with the various characters voices and accents. Had I known the book was about aliens, I might of been put off a little, but the story did a great job of keeping me intrigued. I knew from the first few chapter that the mystery was extra terrestrial, but the horror and mystery elements and way the story knitted together was well paced. Also, at 12 hours long, it is great value, too many books are 4 or 5 hours long and I never entertain spending a credit on something so short. Great book, great story, well written and well narrated. I'm off now to look for more books by the author and narrator. Both have a new fan of their work.

Another fantastic read/listen

This book should be made into a tv show (at least 3 seasons) cause a movie could never do it justice

Loved it!

Great premise and buildup. As usual i fell off abit at the action towards the end. Rather i much enjoy the buildup and uncovering of the facts leading up to the final confrontation. And this book does not dissappoint! I was listening at night, in bed, literally enjoying it and at the same time being afraid of the shadows in my room. Eerie narrator too. At first i thought he was unfit, but as the story unfolded his haphasardly tone added to the story, and i have now bought more books from the same narrator as well as others from the author.

90% great, last 10% almost ruined it all.

Great start and middle.
Give it a try.
I want to complain about the last part. At some point it feels like the author really had to go to the bathroom but he could not before ending the book.
It reminded me of Chekhov's Gun (had to google it, did not know it by heart)
He sets up many pieces that in the end he completely ignores.
Ending felt like a cheap action movie, put in as many explosions as possible and hope people will be blown away.
I do not know if I look forward to the sequel or not.

Worth your spare time.

Starts well but lacks finish

Begins really strong, with credible characters and set up. This continues despite some writing weaknesses (cliches and overuse of ‘pulpy’ descriptions etc) until about 2/3 of the way through. Once in the home stretch, however, it suddenly becomes predictable and tired and instead of being glued to it, I found myself wishing it would just end. Brilliant start, disappointing finish.

Fantastic Creature Feature

Akin to The Thing but very much a unique story. Good body horror, great human and non-human villains, I finished in two sittings. Give it a go.
