About this listen
‘Where have all my friends gone?’
When Max Dickins decided to propose to his girlfriend, he realised there was no one he could call on to be his best man.
He quickly learned that that he wasn’t the only man struggling with friendships. For decades, countless studies from across the world have confirmed that men have fewer close friends than women–and the problem gets worse the older men get. But what goes wrong? And what can men do about it? Dickins is going to find out.
His funny and charmingly candid search takes him to the doors of world-leading experts. It forces him to examine the friendships he’s had over the years, and where they have foundered. And, briefly, it sends him to the website ‘Rent A Friend’, where he pays someone to hang out with him. But let’s not dwell on that.
Join Max as he takes a defibrillator to his social life. As he ultimately discovers that if he wants a Best Man, then he needs to be a better man.

So funny, so insightful
Oh my gosh - laughed so many times while listening to this. It's brilliant! Particularly appreciated Max's 'and' rather 'but' approach to different perspectives. He doesn't sell out to one school of thought, but rather reflects on each, and combines the best of each. Nice mix of self-reflection, personal experimentation, references to thinkers, and conversations with experts. Enjoyed the whole book and cruised through pretty quickly. He's a seriously funny guy. A hearty recommend

Mantastic
Interesting and thought provoking, well worth a read/listen. Listening as a 67 year old man I felt he was talking from his generations experience, zeitgeist, and time of life but the narrative still contained many truths and relevant observations.

Great 1st Half, Lots of Insight & Funny
Starts really well, lots insight, becomes more of an autobiography in the second half, and the second half dragged a little compared to the excellent first, but still quite a few funny bits and a very thought provoking look at male friendship.
Overall would recommend.

Heartfelt, hilarious and insightful
This is one of the best books I've listened to in a long time. As a woman, this has opened my eyes into the complex and dynamic world of male friendships and friendships as whole. Max is an incredible writer, the vulnerability he shares whilst also bringing humour and lightheartedness is something not many can do. A must read/listen for all men and women interested in the inner and often hidden world of friendship
