About this listen

The galaxy’s worst bounty hunter just might be its most relentless hero.

Esper Richelieu is a wizard with a mission: To make the galaxy a better place one lost soul at a time.

Donning the trappings of an interstellar bounty hunter, she delves into the galaxy’s underworld to search out those most in need of help. Whether it’s a teenage runaway or an actor kidnapped by cultists, the victim comes first.

Money is an afterthought. That confuses a lot of clients.

But sometimes the best way to get someone to accept the help they need is to convince them to pay for it. Other times, clients unwittingly fund their own reparations by hiring the last person who’d want to aid them in continuing their wicked ends.

But are pure intentions enough against the vilest forces in the galaxy?

Good fun

The very idea of mixing Wizardry and Magic into Science Fiction didn't gel in mind at all but oh how I was wrong to even think such a thing.
This is (as far as I know), the last current book in the Black Ocean series and I've totally enjoyed every minute of all of them.
J S Morin's characters are all far from shallow or superficial. Each of them come with almost tangible personas and to me took on an almost 'real' life of their own.
I've a fair way to go in this book but I passionately hope the end leaves a big opening for more Black Ocean books.

Brilliantly Entertaining

Good on the whole. Seemed a bit silly that Espa would trust her dark side to control her body for a second!

Enjoyed the series

I'll just agree with everybody else. Following up on the Galaxy Outlaws/Mobius story, this time with Esper in the lead had good potential. A new wizard, a young not-a-dog looking to find his place in the world, and plenty of new characters to meet and old ones to revisit.

Does it deliver on the promise? It does. The story starts a bit directionless, like Galaxy Outlaws, but it all ties into a grander scheme in the end.

This story is very much like GO in its structure, but with a slightly smaller cast and a more dynamic character development plan.

If you haven't listened to the Mobius missions yet, do that first. This builds upon so much of what happened there. You can start fresh here as well but since the styles are so similar I don't see the point of skipping the first ~90 hours personally.

If you have listened to GO and enjoyed its excellent characterization and humour, definitely get this audiobook as well.

Why even review it

Really excellent collection of stories. One of the best value credit uses I've ever had bar the authors 2 other black ocean collections. It really is the series that just keeps on giving.

Excellent Value

Saint-like Esper is tested as a mercenary, a mentor and a foster-mother. What's likely to be harder: battling against zealots, corporations and crime syndicates or fighting to control her inner demons, a willful teenager and the moral high ground?

Will their character growth (and some shrinkage) be enough to keep pace with the obstacles and stakes as they get bigger too?

Blending wonderfully fresh characters with older familiar favourites J.S. Morin's stories continue to suck in readers to a thoughtful and funny universe.

These are absolutely worthwhile reads and something you'll love returning to. Thankfully the Black Ocean's a big place and the stories keep on coming.

Mercy for Hire follows Esper's adventures after leaving the Mobius. Running parallel to the Astral Prime stories both collections acknowledge (without spoiling) the adventures in the other, helping enlarge the universe you'll most likely love by now.
Listen to the Black Ocean: Mobius stories first and then keep on going.

I'm a fan. Listen and you will be too.
