About this listen
Debilitating brain disorders are on the rise - from children diagnosed with autism and ADHD to adults developing dementia at younger ages than ever before. But a medical revolution is underway that can solve this problem. Astonishing new research sheds light on the influence of the human microbiome in every aspect of health, including your nervous system.
In Brain Maker, Dr Perlmutter explains the connection between intestinal microbes and the brain, describing how the microbiome develops from birth and evolves based on the environment, how it can become 'sick', and how nurturing gut health through a few easy strategies can alter your brain's destiny for the better.
With simple dietary recommendations and a highly practical program of six steps to improving gut ecology, Brain Maker opens the door to unprecedented brain health potential.

Planning to listen to it again
As a vegan I take some of the information with a grain of salt, but I learned so many new things and I plan to listen to it again, as it can get quite technical and heavy with scientific terms. You can skip the technicalities and remember the essence, but I love a bit of science and want to make sure I know my “whys”.

Excellent overall but harmful view of Autism
I am a UK GP with over 10 years experience working in Primary Care. I myself have ADHD which was a late adult diagnosis. Most of my family, my wife, children and my wife’s family have ADHD with several people including my daughter and brother being autistic.
The book overall is excellent. I have been interested in natural and nutritional ways of managing health and illness for a long time. The presentation of up to date evidence is very interesting and backs up what I’ve been considering for years. However, I do think the author puts too much focus on the gut bacteria and not enough attention to add on the clear psychosocial links to illness. For example, a huge proportion of obese people are addicts with food being the ‘drug of choice’. There is a strong link between morbid obesity and sexual abuse in childhood. Without addressing these aspects of someone’s life, they won’t simply get ‘better’ by changing their gut bacteria.
The author’s view on autism is totally wrong. Continually referring to it as a “disorder” that he implies is “curable”. He also refers to “mild” and “severe” autism and lists a set of features of autistic children that are very narrow minded. Autism is not a disorder, or a disease. It is a different brain type. My daughter was vaginally delivered, breast fed up to 1 year, was given probiotics from 2 weeks of age and is autistic. I’m certain that improving the gut bacteria of autistic people can help them feel better and improve their brain function, just like anyone else. The changes may be more obvious in some people compared to others. I actually skipped the autism chapter after 5 minutes it was so bad.
The rest of the book is very good and I am glad I have completed it.

Pseudo science ... avoid
If you like reading or listening to a book that is akin to religious indoctrination, this is the book for you. The writer, who is a doctor, has a selective mind that is largely closed to science and reason, except when an academic article confirms his beliefs.
The book is full of taboos, such as gluten and fruit, presented in a way that is almost laughable (ok, so I did enjoy some of it!). There is no analysis of for instance the role of sourdough fermentation.
Sadly, the author’s style and tone is one of conversion: eat my diet, and my recipes, and all will be well. Unfortunately life and science is more complicated.
If you are interested in the fascinating science and research about the microbiology of our gut, avoid this book. Another popular book, 10% Human, offers a more balanced and insightful introduction to this important subject.
