About this listen

All’s fair in love and…publishing?

It’s nearly Christmas, and Dashiell Dawson Dane already has enough on his plate: finding a present for his parents, coming up with excuses not to hang the Christmas lights, and finishing this stupid story he’s been writing (okay, maybe he needs to start writing it). On top of all that, Bobby has been acting…well, strange. The last thing Dash needs, in other words, is to play host when Marshall Crowe—celebrity author and, worse, a friend of Dash’s parents—comes to town.

When Marshall dies in the middle of a public reading of his latest novel, Dash can’t bring himself to believe it was an accident, but he’s determined to stay away from the investigation. Until, that is, the prime suspect shows up on his doorstep, begging for his help. The catch? It’s the same woman who accused Dash, not so long ago, of murdering Vivienne Carver—Hastings Rock’s resident cozy mystery author, Pippi Parker. And helping Pippi might just be the death of Dash.

This addition to the Last Picks series is great, not only do we have a mystery (another murder happens), but also we can see a bit of progress in the story of Dash and Bobby.

Although Dash has enough on his plate, with Christmas coming up and Bobby behaving strangely, he has to play host to his parents' writer friend, Marshall. When Marshall dies, Dash doesn't believe it was an accident, but he wants to stay away from the mess. Until something happens and he has to get involved.

This is a rather light read (considering the other books by this author), but the plot and character development are exceptional. It is impossible not to want to read it all to know more about Dash and Bobby.

The narration of the audiobook is smooth, making it easy to get lost in the story.

Can't wait for the next book!

A great addition to the series

As always, the narration and writing were subperb. I want to smack Deputy Bobby in his stupid face though (but I still love him). And one day Gregory is going to straight up murder me with these endings. I'm glad it seems to be turning around, but I hurt for Dash while the story was going on! The mystery and the Last Picks kept it fun and still cozy and not a true Ashe level of pain IYKYK, but I just need this second half of this series to turn around and give Dash all the happiness he truly deserves!

Superb as always!

I have to say I’m really enjoying these books! I have tremendous empathy for Dashiell (Dash, as he prefers). He’s stuck in a rut. He can’t finish his book. He’s managed a couple of short stories – and even got one published. But it’s not enough. It’s never enough – either for himself or his prolific writer parents. He’s worried whatever he writes won’t be good enough. He’ll sit staring at the cursor. All things I can completely relate to.

Oh, and people keep dying around him. That’s a bit of a problem.

This time, it’s a famous author whom his parents know. A man who made fun of Dash in a really cruel way when he was just a boy. So there’s no love lost between the two men. But Dash delivers a gift from his parents. The writer, Marshall, gets on the stage, says a few nasty words, then keels over dead.

Well, okay then.

The list of suspects is long. The new manuscript goes missing. Everyone is up in arms.
Deputy Bobby is on the job. Dash is still…well, he cares for the man. Doesn’t realize how close they’re growing. I love this subplot, by the way.

In the end, I didn’t see the murderer coming. Well, maybe I guessed them, but I certainly didn’t get the motive. Well done, Gregory.

Andrew Gibson is just the perfect narrator for this series. He nails Dash brilliantly and does a great job with the other characters. I’ve spotted at least one more book and I can’t wait!
