About this listen

Burned-out chef, and a bit of a hippy at heart if he's honest, Max Effort has had enough. He's packed in his job at a swanky Michelin three-star restaurant, grown his hair, berated his parents yet again for giving him such a "go get 'em" name, accepted he's never going to get his ex-wife back, and he's hitting the road.

The house is sold, a VW Campervan bought, and Anxious, his trusty Jack Russell Terrier, has already picked his spot.

Sick of the sight of roux, defiant in the face of deconstructed trifle, green at the sight of truffles, and despairing of anything served on a slate rather than a plate, he's about to embark on a tour of the backroads of Britain. He'll weave his way around the country to visit the sights, go to a few festivals, catch up with friends, and just chill out.

And every single night without fail, he's going to make his main meal in his cast-iron pot. It's one-pot cooking or bust for Max, and he cannot wait.

Freedom at last. The open road with his best friend for company. No hot, sweaty kitchens, shouting chefs, uppity waiters, or demanding customers. Just countryside, campsites, back-to-basics cooking, and the stars at night.

Then there was a murder....

Read the books

The narrator was awful, it nearly prevented me from finishing it after the first chapter. The Welsh accent was terrible and in some scenes I am sure the accents were mixed up. The story was ok but I think the books in this series should be read and not listened to.

A good story ruined by the narrator

A good story, addressing a familiar theme but in a quirky way I'd never come across before but totally ruined by the narrator.
I nearly gave up several times but the story kept me going not the story teller!!! Oh my god, the terrible accents, someone dragged in off the street could have done better.

Funny unbelievable cosy mystery

Would have been much more enjoyable without the horrific narration Which actually stooped me from listening to it and made it a struggle to get through

Wrong narrator

Unfortunately I didn’t listen to the sample first, if I had I wouldn’t have purchased this book.
The narrator would be perfect for books on manners and etiquette or royalty books or a narrator for a camp character but not good for a 6ft1 divorced chef, who ends up in a murder mystery.
I couldn’t finish it.

Dreadful narrator

the story seems silly but fun. nice lighthearted read, I thought. but I should have listened to the sample. The narrator is AWFUL. His voice grates on the ear and it sounds like he's reading to 4 year old. I couldn't listen beyond chapter 2. I may buy the kindle version but certainly no more audio books with this narrator.

Whew ... what to say!

I thought the idea for the story was quite unique and potentailly really interesting, especially as I enjoy trips away in my own campervan. But, I did wonder if the author has ever spent any time away in a small campervan? The reality of the living and cooking facilities can be rather different!
The setting and plot ideas for the novel had a lot of potential. However, some parts. along with some of the character depictions (especially that of the parents!) really needed some rethinking to make it a little more authentic and 'believable'.
It didn't really help that the narrator's voice, including attempts at differing accents, was quite offputting.
In general, it could be that the author is still be finding their 'voice' as a writer, so I will try again with the next novel!

Jolly camping fun.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a nice light listen, made me laugh out loud (in the office - awkward) and I felt part of the story. It's not high brow, it's fun.
The narrator has a 'stylev which will suit some and not others so listen to the sample.
I'm looking forward to the next in the series so don't take too long Audible.

brilliant story, great characters, shocking accents.

A really good story. The setting makes a nice change. But the narrators Welsh accent is truly shocking. it swings from vaguely Welsh, to Italian, to Indian, but most of the time, just weird .Unlike some of the reviews I read, it didn't ruin the book for me. But it's best to be prepared.

poor choice of narrator

Struggled with the narrator from the start..at the start of chapter 3 i lost the will to live, particularly when the atrocious welsh accent made its appearance..as for the book itself, I found it tedious & as if the author was trying too hard..I was left feeling both irritated & frustrated....

Bizarre Narration!

This title, read by Gareth Richards, put me off slightly! I can’t adequately explain why, I just wasn’t expecting his voice (I can’t put it into words). After a while, I became accustomed, but not accepting, of it.

The trouble is, I couldn’t properly focus on the story and therefore cannot adequately rate it! This is a first for me, where the narration was so off putting that it totally detracted from the content of the story. Even the recipe at the end was uninteresting.

I shan’t be reading the rest of this series. I didn’t experience any humour within it, or engage in the mystery (which seemed pretty random). This certainly gives “Cozy Mystery” a bad name.
