Summary

The year is 1492. Sixteen-year-old Titus Devere is thrown out of his religious order after proving that a divine revelation (blood streaming from a religious icon) was a fake, using his knowledge of Moorish science. He is brilliant and gorgeous but, cast as a heretic, he is sent to the Vatican in Rome where he expects to be punished or executed. Instead he is recruited into a secret order investigating strange occurrences across Europe. Known as The Order of the Dragon, it is headed up by a mysterious man with a tattoo of a coiled dragon eating its own tail on his arm.

Titus is sent to investigate an abbess who has been accused of witchcraft, alongside her slave and Moorish half-sister, Ishrak. The abbess, Ygraine, is actually a fifteen-year-old girl who has been shut up in a nunnery by her brother after her father's death, to ensure that she cannot inherit any of the family estate. Ygraine is a reluctant nun and manages to escape the abbey with Ishrak, though no one can work out how they did it. Titus is intrigued - could they really be using witchcraft? He follows their route and ends up linking up with them on their travels.

Titus and Ygraine find themselves attracted to one another, despite the conventions of the time. They travel across France, Switzerland, and over the Alps into Romania. En route they encounter alchemists, poisoners, inquisitors, purported witches, and more - ending up at the castle of real-life historical figure VladDracul (meaning Dragon in Latin).

A superb blend of history and fiction

As this book was written by Philippa Gregory it was no surprise to find such a wealth of detail. The backgrounds and circumstances of the four fictional characters are excellent. All of them are sympathetic and come alive thanks to the narrator. Each character has a distinct voice to fit the personality. I am delighted to have three further books in this series. Highly recommended

Disappointing

I am normally an avid reader of all things medieval but found this story lacking in terms of the plot. I guessed the ending about a third into the book. The secondary plot around the wolf felt like an after thought and the ending felt odd. To me it was part of a story that didn’t really have time to develop the characters or plot fully before it came to an end.

A good book spoilt…

This was a really enjoyable story sadly spoilt by the narrator who struggled with accent’s for each character.

Gripping

What made the experience of listening to Changeling the most enjoyable?

Charlie Cox has a wonderful voice. He has a lovely tone. I've read this book many times and wanted to listen to it. I was totally gripped, it was a very different experience to reading the book. Charlie bought it to life. Fantastic! Can't wait for the next two installments.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Not everything is as it seems, look deeper.

Not the usual Philippa Gregory but enjoyable

The very first paragraph caused me to have to go and research the possible validity of the statement - ‘as if he had been shot with a hand gun’. Research tells me that hand guns started to appear around 10th century but not in any form recognisable as the current hand gun idea until mid 1800’s. This niggled immediately but the rest of the book stays true to its time and has arrows, stones and pitchforks.

It’s a really interesting idea, well written and with attractive characters.

I have to say, however, that I did not enjoy the vocalisation, in particular of the Moorish girl. I understand that it is difficult to have separate voices for each of so many characters but I did feel that this detracted from the overall story and that is maybe because she doesn’t seem in keeping with the time.

Overall, enjoyable and I will no doubt listen to a sequel.

Interesting storyline with historical facts.

I enjoyed this story that gave a very interesting look into history, especially women's place in society and superstition. Narrated very well. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
