Summary

Return to the world of the Liveships Traders and journey along the Rain Wild River in the third instalment of high adventure from the author of the internationally acclaimed Farseer trilogy.

Kelsingra awaits for those brave enough to enter…

The dragons and their keepers have discovered Kelsingra but so far only Heeby has succeeded in flying over the river to enter the fabled city. The other dragons, with their deformed wings and feeble muscles, are afraid to risk failure and humiliation.

But wondrous things await in Kelsingra, a city built for dragons and their Elderling keepers. Alise, overwhelmed by the treasures she finds there, records her finds for posterity. Once the rest of the world knows about the riches the city contains, nothing will ever be the same again.

Already, rumours of the city’s discovery have floated down the Rain Wild River and reached envious ears in Bingtown and beyond. Adventurers, pirates and fortune hunters are coming in droves to pillage what they can from the city. As is Hest Finbok, Alise’s husband…

Meanwhile, Selden Vestrit finds himself a prisoner of the ailing Duke of Chalced, who believes him to be some sort of dragon-man whose flesh and blood may work miracle cures.

Where is Tintaglia, the great sapphire-blue dragon, when all have such need of her? Has she really abandoned her beloved Selden and the fledgling dragons forever? Or will she too return to seek the wonders of Kelsingra?

Critic reviews

"In today’s crowded fantasy market Robin Hobb’s books are like diamonds in a sea of zircons." (George R. R. Martin)
"Hobb is superb, spinning wonderful characters and plots from pure imagination." (Conn Iggulden)

"Hobb is one of the great modern fantasy writers… what makes her novels as addictive as morphine is not just their imaginative brilliance but the way her characters are compromised and manipulated by politics." (The Times)

Saskia 👌

Expertly read. Aside from Morgan Freeman or Stephen Fry, I wish the entirety of the series was read by Saskia Butler.

Awful narration!!

Bring back Jacqui ???? (narrator of Dragon Haven). She made the characters wholly recognisable, and gave them depth and gravitas. Saskia KILLS the strong women Jacqui portrayed, turning them into mere shadows of what they were! And what in hells name did she do to Rapscal!! He went from a slightly silly, happy go lucky young chap, to a monotone bore. AND does Saskia not realise that she reads of Live ships, (as in Alive), the very basis of the books, and yet pronounces Live, but as in I live here, many times. Unforgivable!! The story is great, but Saskia was most definitely the weakest link!!!

Fantastic series.

Absolutely loving the Rain Wild Chronicles, City Of Dragons is the third book in the series. I was hooked on book one, from living in the trees of Trehaug and Cassaric to adventures on the Rain Wild river and dragons, what more could you want. I know these books are fantasy, but they also feel very real in my mind. Robin Hobb paints such a clear picture of the cities, towns, people and adventure that I feel that I am living it myself and feel a very big part of the characters and Dragons lives. Things are about to get very real for our group of misfits. After discovering the Mythical city of Kelsingra and the wonders it holds, will it be kept secret or overrun with greed, deceit and by outside treacherous influences. The plot is fantasic and the worldbuilding just gets better and better with each book. I really love the asides between chapters that Robin Hobb uses to expand her world in which her stories are set, and they provide a humorous and interesting companion to the main story. I'm in love with Robin Hobb's books and have been mesmerised and enthralled by her dragon world every bit as much as the Assassin and Fool series. So much so ive read this book quickly over a couple of days and just can't get enough, now I can't wait to to delve into book four Blood Of Dragons. I can't highly recommend this series enough...😁💙🔥🐉

Another great book in the series

I like the series. I even think would be nice to listen with children to ask what they think about various actions by characters

Amazing story but PLEASE keep same pronunciation!

I think all the narrators for this series did a pretty good job, but please could there be some agreement about how names are pronounced.

Excellent!

Loving this series, it’s very addictive. The story is gripping with really well developed characters. The narrator is excellent. I do wish they’d keep the same narrator for the whole series though, as each time they change I take half the book to get used to the new narrator and it’s distracting.

Not up to standard

In short. It is a good story, with a lack of a proper ending. Nothing got resolved, and that is a dissapointment after the previous works by Robin Hobb.
