About this listen

Harry is on a special mission.

Detective Harry Hole arrives in a steaming hot Bangkok. The Norwegian ambassador has been found dead in a seedy motel room, and Harry has been sent to investigate. It’s clear that the Ambassador’s family are hiding some secrets of their own, but few people are willing to talk. He needs to solve a crime and avoid a scandal.

When Harry lays hands on some incriminating CCTV footage, things only get more complicated. The man who gave him the tape goes missing, and Harry realises that failing to solve a murder case is by no means the only danger that faces the unwary. But in an unfamiliar city, who can you trust?

This is a thoroughly entertaining book. It starts slow and at a point even started thinking whether it would become interesting, but then the twists and turns and the rather unexpected ending make it all worthwhile.
I confess I have hesitated to pick up Nesbo's audiobooks, but I am now hooked, They always bring enjoyable experiences, smartly written stories and Sean Barrett's narration is an indispensable part of it all.
Easy to recommend.

Thoroughly entertaining

A compelling read that had me guessing right to the end. The first outing for a formula that has hooked me throughout the Harry Hole Series

Compelling First in the Series

Any additional comments?

I’ve previously read all of Jo Nesbo’s Harry Hole thrillers as books, but decided to give this one a go as an audio book.

The narrator, Sean Barrett does a great job of bringing the characters to life and the story is a good one to. At first I found the Norwegian names (there are also a lot of Thai characters in this one) confusing but I soon got drawn in to the story.

I’ll definitely give other Jo Nesbo books a try as audio books—highly recommended!

Cochroaches by Jo Nesbo

Not in the "Suspense Thriller" category. One of the most complicated explanations for a murder I've ever heard. Reminds me of Dusty Bin.
Sean Barrett as a great narrator, but a convincing Norweigean accent isn't his strength.

Just a police investigation

I really enjoy Jo Nesbo's style of writing. Great story teller. Must have been an exceptional journalist.
Harry Hole is a man that most can identify with. He is the epitome of a functioning alcoholic. And, probably a better policeman than the sober ones we meet in need.

Harry Hole good detective, accomplished drunk

Oh dear, perhaps I didn't try hard enough. I became quite muddled by all the characters - should have written them all down with short synopses as to who they were - so I was less than interested by the plot as it carried on. Also Sean Barrett, who is the most brilliant narrator, seemed to have a strange voice for Harry Hole ....... I have listened to quite a few of the later books and this is only the second in the series, so perhaps he adapted his voice as the series unfolded. Descriptions of Shanghai were interesting - unsavoury but interesting! But as a whole I was relieved when the book ended.

Not my favourite Harry Hole

Really good narrator, sometimes all the character names were hard to remember but the narrator used different voices for all the characters which helped. Great story, roll on the next Jo Nesbo book

Enjoyed it
