Summary

Cambridge attracts the brightest minds, the darkest forces, and the deadliest monsters.

The latest freshers have more than fitting in to fear when a forbidden entity is unleashed in an ancient seat of learning. New arrivals Nick and Annabel feel out of place at university, but when they are attacked by a creature straight out of their worst nightmares, their first term becomes less pass-fail than do-or-die.

As the bodies pile up, their college’s dark secret cannot stay hidden for long. And when their tutors fall prey to mysterious forces, can Nick and Annabel enroll the night climber Giles to help banish the beast before freshers’ year becomes their last?

College of Shadows is the pause-resisting first novel in the Cambridge Gothic series. If you like Lev Grossman’s The Magicians, with haunted heroes, unspeakable horrors, and parallel worlds, then you’ll love Mark Wells’ urban fantasy tale.

BookTok made me do it

This is the first of many, and most surprisingly, this is my BooktTok Made Me Do It book.
This is also my first urban fantasy and an impulse one click after only discovering this author a couple of days ago.

I was held captive throughout and enjoyed getting to know the characters in this story. A lot of mystery/suspense with a gripping and bone-chilling plot.

I enjoyed Mark Wells’ storytelling immensely- the setting was so visual, tangible even as we experience this story through multiple POVs in the Cambridge University setting- I will never think of Cambridge university the same after this book.

The narration by this narrator was fantastic as he captured a range of accents that made each character feel unique and true to themselves.
An audiobook well deserving of an Audible credit.
Now onto book two.

Different to anything I have listened to

Never did like Gargoyles and in the story something like them came to life. Keeps you listening and if you have hair it might stand on end 😀

Takes a while to get going, but enjoyable

I have enjoyed listening to this one, the narrator is very very good (his female voices are a bit so-so, but I got used to it). There’s lots of scene setting, and it took a while to get going, but once it does, it’s a great story, and good listen. I’m looking forward to the next one in the series, and I hope all the characters will be back.
