Summary

What lurks behind the charming façade?

Writer Mark Endicott moves to a Dorset village, where he buys the small, almost derelict Corpse Path Cottage. It occurs to him that it would make the ideal setting for a murder.

A sinister promise.

Before long, one of the village’s residents is mysteriously shot dead nearby.

Mark’s life begins to unravel even as he helps the police solve the mystery. In the process he uncovers a tale of intrigue, bigamy, and blackmail.

The secrets of the villagers won’t stay secret for long.

But at what cost?

Old fashioned charm

It took a while to warm up, introduce the dramatis personae, and the map where the events took place. However, about half way through the pace picked up and we jogged to a dénouement.
Many of the characters are less than 3D, and it is written determinedly from a male, early 20th century point of view. However, all in all, a gentle piece and not without charm.

Thoroughly enjoyable

Delightful mystery novel, well written. I enjoyed the historical and literary allusions and Corpse Path Cottage is true to the time it is set in, just after WW2 (I was born in 1947 so recognised the era from my childhood). The narration was good apart from a few mispronunciations and James Langton has a pleasant voice.
I’m writing this immediately after listening to the second novel in this series, Sixpenny Holding, which I’m afraid wasn’t as enjoyable for me as I really don’t like children and found the novel irritating and the female narrator’s voice less pleasing to listen to, again with some mispronunciations. Nonetheless I’m hopefully looking forward to Margaret Scutt’s next book.

Very enjoyable!

A very enjoyable book. A good, genuinely old fashioned cozy mystery in the style of Agatha Christie. The amusing descriptions of village life post WW2 were brilliant! And the ending was very satisfying with all the loose ends tied up. Well written and well narrated.

Depends on your preference.

The narration is superb but the story, even after the murder, drags on and on.
Would be a lovely rainy day movie but as an audible book, a brilliant sleeping pill.

Entertaining

At first I came close to leaving this unfinished but I am glad I persevered. It started off slow but gathered pace and I found myself enjoying the characters and storyline.

Kept me interested

A good story with an interesting ending. An author buys a cottage for him and his dog, but little did he know that a murder would take place near his cottage, the story unfolds slowly with a few twists on the way. The narrator was clear and easy to listen to.

Unexpected fun story

Got a bit confused at the beginning with all the characters but actually really enjoyed the story and especially loved the ending.
Just a really enjoyable easy listen.

Lighthearted Entertainment

The narration is great. The story is a gentle ramble with a mix of detection countryside description and gentle humour.
