About this listen

THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

'Emily Oster is the non-judgemental girlfriend holding our hand and guiding us through pregnancy and motherhood. She has done the work to get us the hard facts in a soft, understandable way' Amy Schumer

Parenting is full of decisions, nearly all of which can be agonized over. There is an abundance of often- onflicting advice hurled at you from doctors, family, friends, and strangers on the internet. But the benefits of these choices can be overstated, and the trade-offs can be profound. How do you make your own best decision?

Armed with the data, Oster finds that the conventional wisdom doesn't always hold up. She debunks myths and offers non-judgemental ways to consider our options in light of the facts. Cribsheet is a thinking parent's guide that empowers us to make better, less fraught decisions - and stay sane in the years before preschool.

A truly honest and insightful guide to more relaxed parenting. I enjoyed every minute and couldn’t wait to listen. I found it so relatable to my life with 2 kids. Highly recommend for expecting parents and parents of young children. I’m only sorry I didn’t hear about this book 3 years ago.

Fantastic book

Save yourself hours of searching online and reading differing opinions - this book summarises all the available research on the important topics and presents it in a practical and digestible way with a sprinkle of the authors own experience which makes it more personable. I listened in pregnancy and then I’ve come back to it again and again through the different stages of my parenting journey and always found it the most balanced and evidence based resource out there. I’m a doctor and like to base my decisions on research and not myths/opinions/biased advice and this was the best book I found that does this. Really recommend.

Much needed evidence based parenting advice!

I love that she looked into studies and summarized what is there to know about key things for new parents.

entertaining and informative

I had already had my first child early 2019, so any reading or chance of reading went out the window. During my second pregnancy I found this on Audible and listened to this bit by bit with my partner that provoke pleanty of conversation.

I didn't want to breastfeed once I said I would give expressing a go this time. I hated the idea of my nipples doing touched in any way, shape, or form... But I gave it ago and it wasn't to bad! However my body just didn't want to produce milk. I'm from the UK and we're supposed to be seen by a midwife at home within 24hrs, it took three days and they didn't even know we had been discharged, it was a mess straight from the beginning and we've been forgotten about on multiple occasions when it's come to vaccinations and prenatal check-ups.

But one thing I never would have thought to ask for or would've been advised to take was Domperidone. I have never heard of it prior to this book. I had no milk, I pumped and pumped with nothing to show. I begged for domperidone (after reading up about it ofcourse). At first I was told "it's not prescribed for that and you should just formula feed instead". It was a male doctor, I cried and said, "ofcourse you, a male, would say something like that after being let down over and over again.". He got me a female doctor a week later and she had known about this bring perscribe for this purpose and it worked!! My baby is nearly 10 weeks and I simply can't catch up with the amount I need, but I'm managing to feed him for a while and express enough to give him a bottle every few days, which is better than nothing. I couldn't be more greatful for this information. Thank you xx

A pretty good place to start when you’re looking for some advice on decisions for your family and possibly more importantly for reminding yourself that doing what works for you and your baby is likely what’s best most of the time. We’re on baby 2 and it would’ve helped to read it before baby 1.

Worth a read for new and old parents

I love Oster’s data driven approach to all the questions parents have in the early years. An enjoyable read as much as it is informative.

Narrator made it easy to listen, book content was good. It's a difficult subject as so much is personal choice but the author is good at making this clear.

a good overview

Emily is critical, funny, and understanding. critical in her study of the data available to us to make more informed choices. Funny in sharing real life stories from her own parenting experience. Understanding that we all want what is best for our kids and sometimes something that works for one family may not for another.

fascinating

I love this book. I trust Emily to have thoroughly searched for the data and it’s a gift to be given a simple summary bullet point on relative impact. This has saved me from the endless internet rabbit holes that were driving me crazy. Excellent work Emily! Much appreciated!
