Summary

A secluded island. A missing woman. An impossible choice.

Detective Inspector Karen Eiken Hornby is not the only person to have returned to her native island nation, Doggerland, after years abroad. Following a ten-year hiatus, Luna has chosen to secretly record her comeback album where she was born and raised. Spirits are high among her team at the wrap party, though Karen is less than impressed with the simpering singer. The next morning, Luna is nowhere to be found.

Nothing goes unnoticed in the tight-knit community—certainly not the arrival, or disappearance, of a world-famous singer. So, while the rest of the force is frantically searching for a suspect whose brutal attacks on women are increasing in intensity and frequency, a reluctant Karen is tasked with discreetly looking into Luna's whereabouts.

As time ebbs away so does the possibility of finding Luna alive, while Karen faces seemingly impossible choices, ones that could spell life or death, both for herself and others.

Good plot and characters

I like this series, hope there will be another one soon. Love Doggerland and its customs too.

Good story, narrator not so good

Did not like the narrator at all which was a disappointment as I had been looking forward to continuing the series

Thrilling

A brilliant 3rd book in the series. If reading on audible, and you have loved and listened to the previous narrator I recommend playing on +.15 of your normal speed. Struggled at the start but found my way. Best series in a long time.

Wow.

Wow. "Cruel Tides" is one of the best mysteries I have ever read - Maria Adolfsson is a master storyteller. Immersive, fast-paced and addictively good, "Cruel Tides" takes your breath away and you simply can't put the book down.

New narrator makes this difficult to follow but stick with it

I was really struggling after the first few chapters of this third book in the series. The narrator has changed and it has lost all the charm and unique location of the first books. Names are pronounced differently and the cadence and tone, particularly when narrating a dialogue section is almost unbearable. The scandi vibe is completely lost, with some characters even having a Yorkshire accent now - inexplicable. Someone in the reviews suggested speeding up the narration, i tried 1.15 but it was a little fast, 1.10 was perfect and did help to alleviate some of the bizarre narration choices. I stuck with this as I was invested in the characters but it was disappointing overall

Great trilogy, romped through them all.

Interesting and fast paced unputdownable. Female detective without the nonsense of women being better than men and visa versa the feminism is there but not strangling the stories like so many these days. Interesting plots and revelations- enjoyed them all. Excellent!

Good story. Terrible narration.

Really enjoyed the first book and the narrator, but unfortunately the narrator for this particular book, ruined the story meaning I stopped listening after a few chapters.

Last in trilogy but not last in series I hope?

I loved all the books so far. Karen is a great character, getting to know the fictional Doggerland is like getting to know another character. I am a bit sad to have come to the latest book without being able to jump straight into the next. A goods sign that I really enjoyed this

Why change narrator

I agree with another reviewer that the narrator almost ruined the story for me. I did continue through as it is a brilliantly written story but it took the edge off.

Unhinged narration was a shame. Good story.

I was eager to listen to the third book in the series, however with the change of narrator I was STUNNED by the narration. It wound me up for the duration,it is by far the most irritating cadence, modulation & inflection I've ever encountered. All wrong & genuinely unhinged maddening sing song lunacy. It took massively from what is a good story. the only reason I stuck it out was due to being so invested in the characters from the first two books. This narrator is All Wrong for this series. Excellent writing however.
