About this listen

Peter Brownrigg finds himself on the wrong side of the law - and on the run. As he makes his way to London he meets Kit, another runaway, and with luck on their side they find jobs as apprentices to William Shakespeare.

But then a chance discovery endangers their lives once more...

An action-packed spy thriller set in Elizabethan times, 'Cue for Treason' is a masterpiece of historical fiction, widely considered to be a modern classic.

I loved Geoffrey Trease's stories as a teenager and took the opportunity to listen to the audio version of this one.
Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Very well read by Clive Mantle.
Just wish there were more audio versions of his books.

Enjoyable children's story

I read this about age 11 or 12, many many years ago, but as with a lot of loved childhood books from the early years of the last century I was concerned that it would be dated or full of stereotypes or worse. Thankfully, not only is pleasantly free of racism, sexism or British ‘superiority’, but it’s also a cracking adventure story that many of today’s Years 6-8 would probably love. The story is full of suspense, mystery and even a touch of comedy, its Lake District settings and tales off political intrigue in the time of Shakespeare give it a realism that many such novels lack. I won’t go too much into the plot for fear of spoilers but rest assured it is an Elizabethan page turner. Very well read by Casualty’s Clive Mantle, who manages to convey characters, accents and descriptions effectively. Deserves to be much better known and great to find it here on Audible
