Summary
Independence, a small town and county on the banks of the Hudson River, is a typical, all-American community with a proud history dating back to Colonial times. But just like anywhere else, it cannot escape the darker side of human nature. Murder, violence, corruption; these and other crimes are not the exception in Independence. But Sheriff Amanda Northstar is determined that they don't become the rule.
When the body of Judy Sterling, one of Independence's most prominent councillors, washes up on the bank of the Hudson, the first assumption is suicide. With her car abandoned near the county's main bridge and a suicide note left inside, it seems that Judy willingly jumped to her death.
However, Amanda's intuition tells her that there is far more to Judy’s death than first appears. As more evidence emerges and Amanda and her deputies piece together the growing collection of clues, they discover that Judy was caught up in a web of lies, desperation, betrayal and perhaps even murder.

Audiobook newbie
This first in the series did feel at times rather long but I feel was due to setting background information on the main characters for their future outings. The twist at the end was believable and enough of a surprise. An easy listening, enjoyable first outing for Amanda Northstar and having read the second book I'm really looking forward to hearing it in the future.

Kept me interested all the way
I'm normally a business book reader/listener but thought I'd give this novel a try whilst doing my daily dog walk. I have to say it kept me listening to the very end (unlike some business books I've downloaded). The authors attention to detail helped to bring the characters and locations to life. I'm also now half expecting the Amanda Northstar's son to be featured in a future crime/military thriller. An excellent listen.

What a marvellous book!
Right from the outset this book transported me to the States and I became a part of the community albeit as a silent onlooker!
A gripping and compelling tale with very believable characters and I loved the narration- right mix of accent, easy to listen to tone and a perfect match for the lead character. As ex-military myself I could recognise some of my own traits in two of the main characters - very thought provoking.
Can’t wait until I read more of Sheriff Northstar!

In short, a triumph!
I’ve very quickly come to expect excellence from this author, and Dark River certainly didn’t disappoint. The pace of this tale is exactly my cup of tea, as is the strength of the author in constructing his characters. A good story is nothing without good characters and this tale is full of them. Themes of contemporary America are very much woven into this story but very accessibly so, and readers/listeners soo find themselves enveloped in and caring about what happens. In short, a triumph!

Easy, engaging listen
I’ve listened to this book during my commute. It’s been a great easy listener, with some nice little twists and turns which kept me engaged with the storyline.
I liked the way characters were introduced, with their background added to as the story developed.
I found Blair easy to listen to, bringing the story to life. For me the narrator is key as if I don’t click with someone’s voice it will often put me off continuing to listen.
I’d recommend this book to someone looking for a book that keeps them engaged whilst being easy listening. For me it’s a good holiday listen and I look forward to the sequel.
