About this listen

It began with the breathtaking Daughter of Smoke and bone... This November, the story continues in the astounding sequel, Days of Blood and Starlight Once upon a time, an angel and a devil fell in love and dared to imagine a new way of living - one without massacres and torn throats and bonfires of the fallen, without revenants or bastard armies or children ripped from their mothers' arms to take their turn in the killing and dying.

Once, the lovers lay entwined in the moon's secret temple and dreamed of a world that was a like a jewel-box without a jewel - a paradise waiting for them to find it and fill it with their happiness.

This was not that world.

Critic reviews

“Taylor continues to build an irresistible fantasy world in this grim sequel to her masterful Daughter of Smoke and Bone . . . Taylor's dazzling writing and skill at creating suspense are strong as ever; fantasy lovers will gobble up this book with satisfaction” ( Publishers Weekly Starred Review)
“For once the frenzy over a teen novel is justified. Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor is one of those books that blots out reality, so consumed do you become in its fantasy world of chimeras and angels . . . inevitably there is an epic romance but Taylor is a talented writer; this is aeons apart from the usual angels and werewolves dross.” ( Sunday Telegraph)
'Daugther of Smoke and Bone is that rare beast: a novel that takes the familiar and makes it appear startling and new. Taylor has embraced the mythology of angels and reworked it in an extraordinary form, so that by the end of this lyrical, haunting book, I wanted to believe in the existence of these violent, tormented beings. I can hardly wait for the next installment.”
"WOW. I wish I had written this book." (Patrick Rothfuss)
"'You don't want this book to end . . . it's cancelling-weekend-plans, stay-up-all-night-addictive." ( Easy Living)
"Northern Lights and Pan's Labyrinth in one." ( Stylist)
"A pacy and inventive tale of a girl with an unknown past and supernatural friends . . . Mesmerising." ( Marie Claire)

Amazing!

Wonderful sequel to Daughter of smoke and bone, could not stop listening to it. Kristine Hvam narrated it beautifully. I'm off to get the next book in the trilogy which I can not wait to listen to.

Long but rewarding

Again, like my review of the first book of this trilogy, the second was similar in the sense that its detailed long build up lasted many chapters before really being able to sink into the new adventure. There was a lot of back tracking and reminding to begin with, the introduction of new characters and their stories, and it was slightly frustrating to hold on to, wanting to hear more of our main characters adventures. I would say it really picked up pace only by chapter 20/30, but it was worth the wait, for the dramatic climax and the twist in the story that sent my blood pulsing with anger and then amazement at one point. Onto book three'; here's hoping the ending will be worth the waiting.

Missing chapter

What a great book - absolutely gripping, and a good sequel. Disappointing then that chapter 82 was impossible to play. Borrowed the book from the library to read the short chapter, then resumed with Audible. Not a huge problem but it certainly broke the flow. I can’t find any mention of this in any other reviews so it must just be my app.

Brilliant, Original Masterpiece

Firstly, me tell you what makes this book awesome: the brilliance of the author and the manificence of the narrator who is able to bring to life the multitude of characters, emotions, and physical settings (the different worlds) - this brilliant combination is what makes this book and all the other books in this series a 5-star listen!! Not one of the books in this series lets you down - they all live up to the hype, build on the story so well until its final conclusion. Even though you know there is a sequel, and the potential for more to the story, each book leaves you with a satisfying end.

Laini Taylor has somewhat developed her own unique style in delivering a sci-fi story. She describes the other (alien) world so well, her descriptive imagination reals draws you in, inserts you into the worlds and places she takes you, including here on earth. Laini allows you to get to know each character intimately, and there are many key characters, enabling you to appreciate each character's role in the whole scheme of things. You will develop a fondness for some, love some and even love to hate others, and develop several favorites from the heroine and hero, to their close counterparts and their enemies. Hence I am now using this book and series to help my kids develop their writing skills (develop imagination, descriptive writing, etc.) - the only problem is, and this applies to even those who can't read to save their life, my kids don't want to stop listening to this audiobook!!

I found this book and all books in this series mesmerising, captivating, intellectually stimulating, very funny in some parts, romantic and very emotional in other parts. Laini, with the help of such an awesome narrator, make the experience of the worlds, the story, the book, appear very, very real - this book and series allows you to truly escape from the here and now and never want to return!!

A solid continuation

4.5 Stars

This was a great continuation on from Daughter of Smoke and Bone. So many twists and turns that I didn't see coming. Really loving the characters and settings of this series and how fleshed out everything is. The only reason it doesn't get a full 5 stars is because I wasn't as compelled to listen to it in one sitting like I was (and did in fact do) with Daughter of Smoke and Bone. That cliffhanger ending however, still has me really desperate to read what happens next.

A heart-wrenching second instalment

A brilliant book 2 in this series, although incredibly bleak. There were very few moments when my heart didn't ache for all of the characters. Zuze and Mik were a pure delight, although I felt constantly on edge by their complete obliviousness to the terrible danger they were in!? Once again a brilliant performance from the narrator - I'll be going straight to book 3 and will be desperately hoping for a happy ending!

A very enjoyable listen!

What did you like most about Days of Blood and Starlight?

The page turning plot

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Both!

Any additional comments?

I listened to this (my first audiobook) whilst recovering from laser eye surgery. I had read the others on paper but obviously was not in a position to read or watch TV so decided to opt for an audiobook to pass the time. I really enjoyed listening to this and loved the voices. I finished it in a couple days. Would highly recommend this.
