Summary

Gritty, complex and effortlessly chilling, Brolly’s Dead Eyed is a grisly crime thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

DCI Michael Lambert thought he’d closed his last case…

Yet when he’s passed a file detailing a particularly gruesome murder, Michael knows that this is no ordinary killer at work.

The removal of the victim’s eyes and the Latin inscription carved into the chest is the chilling calling-card of the ‘soul jacker’: a cold-blooded murderer who struck close to Michael once before, twenty-five years ago.

Now the long-buried case is being re-opened, and Michael is determined to use his inside knowledge to finally bring the killer to justice. But as the body count rises, Michael realises that his own links to the victims could mean that he is next on the killer’s list…

The gripping first novel in a thrilling new crime series by Matt Brolly. Perfect for fans of Tony Parsons, Lee Child and Angela Marsons.

Excellent

I hadn’t come across this author before, but I enjoyed this so much I’ve already downloaded Book 2. The story is long enough for the author to give the listener complicated but very detailed characters, and a mostly plausible story. Of course you still have to suspend disbelief, as with all police procedurals. I hope the main characters sort out their emotional lives, because the “damaged, but brilliant, maverick detective” is getting a bit tedious. Well worth a listen, and David Monteath is a brilliant narrator. Highly recommended.

Enjoyable listen

Very enjoyable book with excellent narration by David Monteath.
Initially I wasn’t sure about this book because here we have another emotionally damaged DCI & I just wandered how it would progress.
About to download book 2.

complicated yet not particularly satisfying

Approached the book with anticipation. Excellent narrator. Enjoyed DCI Louise Blackwell Series. Bit of a mismash with few enjoyable story lines. The author seems obsessed with alcohol abuse.

Good plot.

Narrator had a very pleasant voice but not much atmosphere. It was a little bit like listening to the weather forecast. Sorry

Could be a 5 but I found it tricky to get into

Really enjoyed this though I’d worked out who was doing it quite early on. Likeable characters wonderfully narrated - smiled at the Bristol accent but all quite credible.

Well worth both pursuing with and the credit to buy it. Am moving straight on to book 2!

Frustrating at times

I was gripped by this story, although there are many frustrating elements in it which left me feeling dissatisfied.

I felt that Matt Brolly had too many huge ideas going on here, which inevitably led to dangling threads hastily gathered together at the end.

It kept me guessing, and the narration was superb, but I couldn’t relate easily to the characters and at times I felt stuck in mud.

Overall I would recommend this book but it did leave me feeling frustrated because there were quite a few interesting avenues left unexplored and undertold. I didn’t take to the characters much - again, there were big issues and ideas with the characters but little depth and plausibility.

I think this is a book where readers should just go with the flow and enjoy the bumpy ride, rather than get too bogged down with whys and wherefores. After all, it is fiction not reality!

Gripping Story

So glad to have found a new author I seem to have exhausted my favourites. Found the book gripping, and the narration by David Monteath excellent. I think he needs to go into my list of favourite narrators.
